Recently, good news came that another cross-river tunnel in Hangzhou, the Genshan East Road Cross-River Tunnel, is about to start construction and is expected to be completed in 2020. By then, this expressway will connect Xiasha on the west and Dajiangdong on the east.
About 4,725 meters long, designed speed 80 km/h
Only 4 minutes from Xiasha to Dajiangdong
Four years ago, 31-year-old Xie Xiwen from Shanxi bought an apartment in Dajiangdong. Last summer, he changed jobs to Binjiang, working as a promotion supervisor at a construction company. From home to work, he has to cross the Qiantang River every day.
With work starting at 8:30 a.m., Xie leaves home before 7 a.m., drives across the Jiangdong Bridge to the Desheng Elevated Road, crosses the Jiubao Bridge, and then takes the Airport Expressway to Binjiang.
Hearing that the Genshan East Road Cross-River Tunnel is about to start construction, Xie is very happy. In the future, when commuting home from work, there will be another cross-river route.
In recent years, as major projects have settled in Xiasha and Dajiangdong, and supporting facilities have gradually improved, more and more people choose to work and live in these two places. To go to Dajiangdong, both large and small vehicles must cross the Jiangdong Bridge, which puts considerable "pressure" on the bridge. The soon-to-be-built Genshan East Road Cross-River Tunnel can "relieve pressure" on this bridge.
The Genshan East Road Cross-River Tunnel starts in the west at the south side of Xiasha Aibo Biopharmaceutical and ends in the east at Binjiang Second Road in Dajiangdong, with a total length of about 4,725 meters. Among this, the tunnel section running beneath the river is 4,575 meters long, connecting Xiasha No. 12 Street on one side and the future main road of Dajiangdong—the Genshan East Road East Extension Line—on the other. The current design speed is 80 km/h. Calculating it, traveling the entire tunnel, under no traffic congestion, takes less than 4 minutes from Xiasha to Dajiangdong.
When the entire tunnel is completed in 2020, travel for people in these two places will be much more convenient.
According to the "Hangzhou Four-Year Action Plan for Building a Fast Road Network for the Asian Games and Ensuring Smooth Traffic (2017-2020)", Hangzhou aims to achieve a pattern of "four vertical, five horizontal, three links, and eleven extensions". The Genshan East Road East Extension Project (including the cross-river passage section), as one of the "eleven extensions", will directly serve the "45-minute" spatial-temporal circle of Hangzhou's main city, sub-cities, and clusters after completion, creating a good traffic environment for the 2022 Asian Games.
Hangzhou will have 7 cross-river tunnels in the future
The actions for river-inclusive development are growing, and the traffic flow crossing the river is increasing. How to solve the problem of congestion?
At present, there are 4 cross-river tunnels on the Qiantang River that have been completed or are under construction. With the addition of the Genshan East Road Cross-River Tunnel, Hangzhou's cross-river tunnel team will grow to 5.
Let us introduce these "friends" that provide more cross-river options for Hangzhou.
Qingchun Road Tunnel: Completed. Located between Qiantang Second Bridge (Pengbu Bridge) and Qiantang Third Bridge (Xixing Bridge). It connects Qingchun East Road to the north and Xiaoshan Shixin North Road to the south, with a total length of 5,352 meters, dual four lanes, and a design speed of 60 km/h. It is Hangzhou's first cross-river tunnel.
Qiantang Tunnel: Completed. Located east of Qiantang Ninth Bridge (Jiangdong Bridge). The entire Qiantang Passage starts in the north at Yanguan Town, Haining, Jiaxing, crosses the river, then runs south through the Xiaoshan Jiangdong Industrial Park, and connects to the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Ningbo Expressway.
Wangjiang Road Cross-River Tunnel: Under construction. Located between Qiantang Third Bridge (Xixing Bridge) and Qiantang Fourth Bridge (Fuxing Bridge), it starts in the north at Wangjiang Road in Shangcheng District, passes beneath the Qiantang River, and connects to Jianghui Road in Binjiang District in the south. With a total length of 3,240 meters, the main line has dual four lanes, a design speed of 60 km/h, and is planned to be completed by the end of 2019.
Bo'ao Tunnel: Under construction. Located between Qiantang Third Bridge (Xixing Bridge) and Qingchun Road Cross-River Tunnel, with a total length of about 2,800 meters. The entire tunnel is designed with dual 4 lanes, the current design speed is 60 km/h, and it is planned to open to traffic by the end of 2020.
In addition, Hangzhou has also planned 2 cross-river passages—
Wenze Road—Xincheng Road Tunnel: A long-term plan, located between Jiubao Bridge and Xiasha Bridge; the specific route has not yet been planned.
Xianghu North Road—Junshi Road Tunnel: A long-term plan, located between Zhijiang Bridge and Yuanpu Bridge; the specific route has not yet been planned.
