Over a Thousand Pile Foundations Deeply Driven Underground in the Yantai South Railway Station Reconstruction

Since construction was fully suspended on October 28, 2025, work has been advancing at full speed with a "seize the day, race against time" attitude. As of now, the main structure of the East Building has been successfully topped out, the construction of the EMU depot has entered a critical攻坚 period, and the project as a whole is steadily advancing toward the goal of completion and operation on June 30, 2027. The prototype of an important high-speed rail hub in the Bohai Rim region has already taken shape.

Standing at the construction site, the striking contrast between old and new is immediately palpable. The original station building had only 2 platforms and 5 tracks, with a building area of less than 10,000 square meters, and had long been unable to match Yantai's passenger flow demand as a regional central city. After this reconstruction and expansion, the station building area will reach 58,000 square meters, nearly a sixfold expansion, adopting an innovative "side-style + elevated waiting hall" configuration, with 2 above-ground floors, 1 underground floor, and partial mezzanine levels, capable of accommodating tens of thousands of passengers waiting at the same time. The station yard scale will be simultaneously upgraded to 5 platforms and 11 tracks, achieving a qualitative leap in train reception and departure capacity and completely ending the previous predicament of "a small station unable to handle large passenger flows." Of even greater strategic significance, the project will simultaneously build the Yantai South EMU Depot, equipped with 6 inspection shed lines and 30 stabling lines, with 17 lines reserved for the long term, and supporting facilities including a 7.98-kilometer EMU running line and a 1.8-kilometer turnback line, ending Yantai's history of having "no EMU depot" and making it the fourth city in the province to possess one. This means that in the future, the number of trains originating and terminating in Yantai will increase substantially, residents will no longer need to transfer frequently when traveling, and "leave whenever you want" high-speed rail travel will become the norm.

The topping out of the East Building's main structure is an important milestone in the project's advancement, but by no means the end point. The project's chief engineer acknowledged that construction of the north main building has only just begun, and within a full 300-day construction period, the entire sequence of foundation, main structure, and decoration and finishing work must be completed—like a relay race that cannot slow down.

At the construction site, more than a thousand pile foundations are driven deep into the ground, reaching a maximum depth of 32 meters, laying a solid foundation for the new station building; 19,000 tons of steel structure will be integrally lifted into place, erecting the station building's "steel backbone." Underground space is being excavated simultaneously, with 1,300 parking spaces planned within, zoned for private vehicles, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles to achieve efficient traffic separation. The station-front comprehensive transportation hub is being built simultaneously, with bus station buildings, long-distance bus station buildings, and taxi drop-off areas arranged above ground, and underground connections to reserved subway space, creating a "zero-distance transfer" system integrating high-speed rail, buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles, thoroughly resolving the previous pain points of "difficult transfers and difficult parking."

In terms of design, the new South Station fully showcases Yantai's coastal city characteristics. The folded-plate roof is paired with a transparent, daylit facade, and the high side windows align crosswise with the platform canopies, ensuring both ventilation and daylighting while creating a well-arranged urban landscape. The station-front plaza adopts "Green Coast" as its design concept, incorporating marine cultural elements and integrating historical heritage with modern transportation, making the hub not only a travel node but also a new gateway showcasing Yantai's city image. During construction, railway, bus, and highway passenger transport departments have coordinated and optimized operations, with 92 passing trains diverted to Yantai, Muping, Penglai and other stations, minimizing the impact on residents' travel and demonstrating the warmth of a livelihood project.

From an "ordinary station building" to a "comprehensive hub," the significance of the Yantai South Station reconstruction far exceeds transportation itself. It breaks regional transportation bottlenecks, enables Yantai to deeply integrate into the Bohai Rim high-speed rail network and the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail auxiliary corridor, strengthens interconnection with cities such as Qingdao, Jinan, and Beijing, and lays the foundation for Yantai to build itself into an international comprehensive transportation hub city. At the same time, the agglomeration effect of the hub economy will be gradually unleashed, driving the clustering of surrounding commerce, logistics, and business industries and injecting new momentum into the city's high-quality economic development.

At present, the project has entered the critical stage of "intensive sprint, no work stoppage throughout the year." In July 2026, construction of the elevated waiting hall will be completed, and within the year, track laying, signal debugging, and mechanical and electrical installation will be advanced; in March 2027, static acceptance and joint commissioning and testing will begin, ensuring operation as scheduled by the end of June. From pile foundation construction to main structure topping out, from station building construction to the EMU depot攻坚, every step embodies the sweat of the builders, and every step carries the expectations of the citizens.

The reconstruction of Yantai South Station is a microcosm of Yantai's leap in transportation capacity and a vivid footnote to the city's high-quality development. When the new station is put into operation in midsummer 2027, this modern high-speed rail hub will appear in a brand-new posture, lifting Yantai toward a more efficient and prosperous future and making travel to and from the "Fairyland of Mountains and Sea" smoother and more convenient.
