On November 30, the 200 MW/800 MWh semi-solid-state lithium battery energy storage station project in Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia—China's largest installed-capacity semi-solid-state lithium battery storage project, constructed by Hubei Engineering Company under Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA)—was successfully connected to the grid, becoming an important milestone in the construction of China's new-type power system and marking that China's semi-solid-state energy storage technology has officially moved from demonstration application into the key stage of large-scale commercial operation.
The project is located in the Wuhai High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Hainan District, Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Upon completion and commissioning, it will not only set a new record for the installed capacity of grid-connected semi-solid-state lithium battery storage projects in China, but also mark that domestic semi-solid-state energy storage technology has achieved the key transition from demonstration application to large-scale commercial operation. The project will have a grid peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capability of 200 MW of power and 800 MWh of capacity, and can deliver 189 million kWh of clean electricity to the grid each year. It will significantly enhance the stability of the power system and the capacity to absorb new energy, providing key support and a demonstration model for the region's construction of a new-type power system.
The project adopts domestically independently developed semi-solid-state lithium iron phosphate battery technology. Compared with conventional liquid lithium iron phosphate batteries, it offers clear advantages in safety performance, energy density, and cycle life, and can substantially reduce the project's full-lifecycle operating costs. The successful grid connection of the Wuhai energy storage project demonstrates the feasibility and advanced nature of China's semi-solid-state battery technology in large-scale grid-side energy storage applications, and has accumulated valuable experience for the subsequent larger-scale commercial promotion of China's semi-solid-state energy storage technology.
Since the start of construction, the project team of Hubei Engineering Company has united as one and overcome a series of challenges such as strong local sandstorms and large temperature differences. By optimizing construction organization, strengthening resource allocation, and efficiently advancing project construction, the team completed the structural topping-out of the comprehensive building in 17 days and the pouring of 200 equipment foundations in the energy storage area in 25 days, fully demonstrating the strong execution and the fighting spirit of the "POWERCHINA iron army" in overcoming difficulties and daring to win.
