Recently, good news came from the world's highest-altitude tower concentrated solar power (CSP) station located in Amdo County, Nagqu City, Tibet. The Tibet Kaitou Amdo Tushuo 100MW CSP project, undertaken by Shandong Electric Power Construction No.1 Company, has achieved a major breakthrough — the main structure of the core receiver tower has been successfully poured to the 100-meter elevation.
It is reported that the receiver tower of the project adopts a hollow thin-walled reinforced concrete tube structure with a total designed height of 185 meters. The completion of the 100-meter elevation marks that the main structure has entered a critical construction stage. After the receiver tower is completed, a high-efficiency receiver will be installed at the top of the tower. Pentagonal heliostats with a total area of 800,000 square meters arranged around the receiver tower will accurately reflect sunlight to the receiver at the top of the tower, heating low-temperature molten salt to 565 degrees Celsius for storage, and then driving a steam turbine through the steam generation system to generate electricity.
Since the commencement of construction, the project has received strong support and assistance from leaders at all levels and professional departments of Shandong Electric Power Construction No.1 Company, and various work including safety, quality, progress and project management has been advancing smoothly. Next, the Tibet Amdo CSP Project Department will strictly implement the strategic guidelines of the Party Committee of Shandong Electric Power Construction No.1 Company, solidly carry out the "Thunder Action" for safety production, strictly control quality, fully promote high-quality project performance, and contribute the power of Power Construction to the development of clean energy on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The Tibet Amdo CSP project is located in the Tanggula high mountain area at an altitude of 4,645 to 4,657 meters. It has not only set a new altitude record for CSP projects in the world, but also provided a replicable "Chinese solution" for clean energy development in high-altitude areas around the world. The smooth implementation of the project is of great significance for further filling the gap in China's clean energy technology in plateau areas and promoting the improvement of China's plateau CSP technology system. It is reported that after the project is completed, the average annual power generation will reach 260 million kilowatt-hours, which can simultaneously meet the electricity demand of more than 50,000 households in Amdo County and surrounding areas, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 220,000 tons per year, effectively solving the problems of "curtailment of wind and solar power" and winter power restrictions in the plateau power grid.
