From Lychees to Geotechnical Engineering: A Fascinating Industry Association     "A galloping horse raises dust as the imperial concubine smiles, no one knows the lychees have arrived." In Ma Boyong's "The Lychees of Chang'an," the low-ranking official Li Shande faces the challenge of transporting fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang'an before the imperial concubine's birthday. Confronted with the characteristics of "color changes in a day, fragrance changes in two days, taste changes in three days" and a journey of five thousand li, he relies on numerical sensitivity, field investigation, and repeated trials, using preservation and transport methods such as the "branch-planting-in-jar technique" to ultimately succeed.

This process is highly similar to the geotechnical industry: geotechnical engineering must complete seemingly impossible tasks under complex conditions, from high-rise building foundations to bridge supports to underground space development, all as full of challenges as transporting lychees. The complexity of geological conditions is comparable to the stringent preservation requirements of lychees; engineering safety and quality standards are akin to the urgent deadline of delivery to Chang'an; and coordinating resources and solving technical problems resemble handling various emergencies during transport. Only by exploring the "preservation" methods of the geotechnical industry can it maintain vitality amid the tides of the times.

Current State of the Geotechnical Industry: Opportunities and Challenges Coexist

The geotechnical industry currently faces multiple opportunities. In the process of urbanization, China's urbanization rate rose from 53.73% to 67% over the past decade. The influx of population has sharply increased demand for infrastructure, and the construction of roads, bridges, rail transit, and other projects all relies on geotechnical engineering support—expressways require assessment of subgrade bearing capacity, and subway stations require foundation pit support design to ensure safety.

National policies inject momentum into the industry. The 14th Five-Year Plan proposes building a transportation powerhouse and promoting the implementation of major projects. For example, the Yarlung Zangbo River water conservancy project presents complex geological conditions that are both a technical challenge and a practical platform for the industry, with engineers driving technological progress through their responses.

Demand for geotechnical engineers is strong. Because the pass rate for the registered examination is only 4%-6%, certificate holders are scarce and salaries are attractive: those with 1-3 years of experience earn about 8,000 yuan per month, while those with 5-10 years of experience and a certificate earn over 20,000 yuan per month and 200,000-300,000 yuan annually, attracting young people to enter the field.

The industry's development faces three major difficulties: first, talent shortage—mature engineers require years of training, high-end talent is scarce, and large projects are difficult to advance; second, lagging technological innovation—traditional technologies struggle to handle complex projects such as ultra-deep foundation pits and subsea tunnels, and R&D is constrained by large capital investment and high risk; third, disorderly competition—low industry barriers have led to a large number of enterprises of uneven quality, with small enterprises disrupting the market through low-price competition, compressing overall profit margins, and harmful competition hindering the industry's healthy development.

Development Wisdom Drawn from "The Lychees of Chang'an"

Li Shande broke with convention, using the "branch-planting-in-jar technique" for preservation, combining double-layer pottery jars, salt water, and ice into a system, and also attempting water-land intermodal transport to optimize routes. The geotechnical industry needs to draw on this innovative spirit: technologically, exploring new reinforcement materials (such as the application of nanomaterials) and intelligent construction (drone surveying and monitoring); conceptually, breaking through traditional design, such as adopting new pile foundations or combining foundation reinforcement with foundation design when building high-rises on soft soil foundations.

Enterprises with potential are advised to join the China Foundation Engineering Technology Innovation Intellectual Property Alliance, leveraging its resource-sharing platform to access cutting-edge technologies, expanding business through exchange and cooperation, focusing on core competitiveness in a regulated environment, and promoting the formation of a healthy industry ecosystem.

Li Shande precisely calculated the time for each stage of transport, allocated resources such as relay stations and boats, and formulated detailed procedures that were strictly executed. Geotechnical projects similarly require: comprehensive preliminary investigation of geological, environmental, and other conditions, and formulation of scientific plans (for example, commercial complex foundations must consider factors such as loads and groundwater levels); reasonable scheduling and optimized resource allocation during construction, with establishment of a quality control system; and rapid response to emergencies to ensure project progress.

Li Shande united fruit growers, merchants, relay stations, and other parties to complete the task. As a comprehensive industry, geotechnical engineering even more needs strengthened collaboration: internal design, construction, and testing departments of enterprises must cooperate closely; communication and cooperation with related industries such as construction, transportation, and water conservancy are needed to jointly formulate optimal plans in large projects; and joint technical R&D with research institutions and universities is needed to integrate resources and overcome difficulties.

Future Prospects of the Geotechnical Industry

Intelligent and digital technologies will become core drivers: in the survey stage, sensors, drones, and other tools will enable high-precision collection of geological information, with cloud computing used to analyze and predict geological disasters; in the design stage, artificial intelligence will generate plans and simulate optimization; in construction, unmanned equipment and building information modeling (BIM) will be applied to improve efficiency and management levels.

Green development will become an inevitable trend: construction will adopt technologies such as prefabricated support to reduce pollution, and photovoltaic monitoring equipment will be used to save energy; foundation treatment will use environmentally friendly materials made from industrial waste; ecologically damaged areas will be restored using technologies such as microbial soil stabilization; and planning and design will emphasize ecological friendliness, such as rational development of underground space and adoption of rainwater harvesting systems, thereby fulfilling environmental responsibilities while expanding market space.

"The Lychees of Chang'an" is like a mirror, reflecting many principles of the geotechnical industry's development. From Li Shande's story of transporting lychees, we deeply recognize the importance of innovation, planning, and collaboration for the geotechnical industry. At a time when opportunities and challenges coexist, geotechnical industry practitioners should take active action. On the one hand, they must be courageous in innovation, continuously exploring new technologies and methods, breaking free from the constraints of traditional thinking, and driving industry development through innovation. On the other hand, they must focus on overall planning, carefully organize construction, strengthen collaboration among all parties, and improve project execution efficiency and quality. Only in this way can we keep the "lychee" of geotechnical engineering fresh as ever in a complex and ever-changing market environment, achieve sustainable development of the geotechnical industry, and contribute greater strength to the country's infrastructure construction and economic development.
