Recently, the Liebherr LS 800 E project—the world's first fully electric ship crane with a lifting capacity of up to 800 tons—at the Weihai Wuchuan Shipyard reached a key milestone: the successful completion of equipment installation, commissioning, and load testing. Following this major milestone, the 14,600-ton multi-purpose heavy-lift vessel equipped with this crane will soon enter the sea trial phase and will subsequently be delivered to the shipowner for operation. The project was launched in November 2024. The 14,600-ton multi-purpose heavy-lift vessel equipped with these two Liebherr LS 800 E cranes is the first of a series of five vessels custom-built by Weihai Wuchuan for the German shipowner SAL Heavy Lift. The fully electric, green, and environmentally friendly Liebherr LS 800 E will help users achieve more environmentally friendly and efficient green heavy-lift operations.

Liebherr Seizes the Opportunity to Advance Green Shipping
As is well known, with the global emphasis on environmental protection, green shipping has become an inevitable trend in the industry's development. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has explicitly set the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by around 2050, prompting the shipping industry to accelerate its transition toward low-carbon and zero-carbon operations. Against this backdrop, Liebherr is actively engaged in the green shipping sector, providing support for green shipping through technological innovation and project cooperation, and helping the global shipping industry achieve its sustainable development goals.
The Liebherr LS 800 E fully electric ship crane is a major innovation in its shipping technology. With numerous outstanding features, it sets a new benchmark for the industry.

Three Core Advantages Empower Green Shipping
The LS 800 E is Liebherr's flagship product designed specifically for offshore wind power and heavy cargo transport, offering three core advantages:
01 Zero Emissions and High Energy Efficiency
It adopts a fully electric drive system, completely replacing traditional diesel power, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions and noise pollution, and increasing energy utilization efficiency by more than 30%.

02 Outstanding Lifting Capacity
The maximum lifting load reaches 800 tons with a working radius of 39 meters. Tandem operation of two units enables precise lifting of 1,600-ton-class cargoes, meeting the transport needs of ultra-large components such as giant offshore wind turbine blades and nacelle modules.

03 Compact and Intelligent Design
The optimized structural layout saves deck space; it is equipped with an intelligent control system, greatly improving operational precision and safety.

The delivery of the LS 800 E Wuchuan project is not only a technological milestone but also demonstrates the shipping industry's determination toward a "zero-carbon transition." In the future, as international maritime environmental regulations continue to tighten, fully electric heavy-lift cranes may become standard equipment on high-end vessels, helping the global shipping industry sail toward a deep-green course.
