Recently, the internationally authoritative journal in the field of geotechnical engineering Computers and Geotechnics (JCR Q1, CAS Zone 1 TOP) announced the results of the 2023 Scott Sloan Best Paper Award. The paper "Investigation of slope failure mode evolution during large deformation in spatially variable soils by random limit equilibrium and material point methods" published in 2019 by Professors Liu Xin and Li Dianqing of the laboratory received this honor.

The Scott Sloan Best Paper Award was established in memory of the late Professor Scott Sloan, a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering of the UK, and the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and an internationally renowned geotechnical scholar. The award is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the SCOPUS citations of papers in the past five years and the opinions of the editorial team. A total of 10 papers were selected this year.

Paper Introduction

To address the difficulty of traditional slope stability analysis methods (such as the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method) in simulating the large deformation process of landslides, this paper proposes a novel random limit equilibrium-material point method framework, which significantly reduces the computational cost of the material point method for quantitative landslide risk assessment. On this basis, the random field theory is used to simulate the spatial variability of the undrained shear strength of the soil, achieving the simulation of the large deformation failure process of landslides considering the spatial variability of soil. Shallow, intermediate, and deep failure modes and a progressive failure mode involving the successive occurrence of multiple failure modes are identified. The quantitative characteristics of different failure modes are statistically analyzed, and the occurrence mechanisms of various large deformation failure modes of landslides are systematically explained. It is revealed that the spatial distribution of soil parameters has a significant impact on the large deformation failure process and consequences of landslides, providing certain theoretical support for landslide investigation, risk assessment, and reinforcement design.
