Civil engineering is the cornerstone discipline through which humanity transforms the material world. As the most tangible material carrier of human civilization, civil engineering refers both to the technical activities involved—materials, equipment, surveying, design, construction, maintenance, and repair—and to the objects of engineering construction. From nest-building with timber and rammed-earth platforms in the dawn of civilization, to hydraulic engineering and megalithic structures in the Bronze Age, and on to contemporary skyscrapers and sea-crossing projects, civil engineering has always resonated in step with the progress of human civilization.

In the current wave of the technological revolution, civil engineering continues to renew itself. Intelligent construction systems enable digital collaboration in design and construction, ultra-high-performance materials push beyond the limits of traditional structures, and ecological engineering technologies reshape the relationship between humanity and nature. Contemporary China is writing a new chapter in civil engineering as a "infrastructure powerhouse": the world's most sensitiveradio telescopeThe FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) listens to the deep universe with its 500-meter diameter; the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the world's longest sea-crossing bridge, links the Greater Bay Area with a 55-kilometer span; and Beijing Daxing International Airport, the world's largest construction project of its kind, demonstrates Chinese construction speed with its "phoenix spreading its wings" design. Guided by the "carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060" strategy, civil engineering is undergoing a historic leap from traditional construction to "green, low-carbon, and sustainable" development, achieving green, low-carbon, and healthy development across the entire life cycle of civil engineering through technological innovation and industrial upgrading. At present, the civil engineering industry urgently needs to strengthen its technical workforce, develop industrialized, digital, and intelligent construction methods, drive the comprehensive upgrading of a new industrialized building system, and build an internationally competitive "China Construction" brand. Looking ahead, civil engineering will continue to demonstrate the characteristics of a "sunrise industry," play an important role in promoting China's economic and social development, and write a future epic of sustainable development.

Founded in 1958, the School of Civil Engineering currently offers three undergraduate programs—Civil Engineering, Urban Underground Space Engineering, and Intelligent Construction—as well as a Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate program in Civil Engineering. It also offers an international undergraduate program in Civil Engineering for overseas students, and holds the "Green Building Technology and Its Theory" doctoral talent training project serving national special needs, a first-level discipline master's program in Civil Engineering, and authorization to confer the Master of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering degree. The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding graduates for admission to master's programs without examination. The school currently has 148 faculty and staff, including 129 full-time teachers, 2,073 undergraduate students, 481 master's students, and 14 doctoral students.

The Civil Engineering program is among the first batch of national first-class undergraduate program construction sites, a national-level characteristic specialty, a program implementing the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program," among the first batch of national comprehensive undergraduate program reform pilot programs, and a key high-level applied program in Shandong Province. It first passed national program evaluation in 2003, successfully passed re-evaluation in 2008 and 2013, and passed engineering education accreditation unanimously in 2019. The Urban Underground Space Engineering program was established in 2011, was rated a key high-level applied program in Shandong Province in 2016, was rated a Shandong Provincial first-class program construction site in 2020, and was selected as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site in 2022. The Intelligent Construction program was established in 2022 as a "new engineering" program added in response to national strategic needs and the transformation and upgrading of the construction industry.

The school has the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Civil Engineering, the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Construction Engineering and Equipment, and the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Construction Engineering Management. The Civil Engineering Structure Safety and Disaster Prevention teacher team is a Huang Danian-style teacher team of Shandong higher education institutions, and the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering teaching team is an outstanding teaching team of Shandong Province.
