新建沪渝蓉高速铁路上海至南京至合肥段是国家中长期铁路网规划“八纵八横”之沿江通道重要组成部分，是长江三角洲城市群骨干城际通道，是一条以路网功能为主兼顾城际功能的高速铁路骨干线路。

上海宝山站是沪渝蓉铁路东端起点，同时也是沪通铁路的重要节点车站、与沪通铁路叠场设置，站型独特。车站与轨道交通、市政相关配套工程相互交织、关联紧密，将建设成为“四场融合、双层车场”的铁路枢纽新典范，对完善区域交通格局、促进沿线城市群联动发展具有重要意义。
