SR220R: A Rock-Drilling Legend Built from Nothing

In Liu's more than twenty years of product design career, the projects he has handled are as numerous as the stars, but the SR220R rock-entry rotary drilling rig is undoubtedly the brightest and most proud star in the depths of his memory.

Before the SR220R came into being, SANY's rotary drilling rigs were mainly used for soil-layer construction; once hard rock strata were encountered, construction efficiency would drop sharply. To break through this technical bottleneck and expand the application scope of rotary drilling rigs, Liu led his team to resolutely embark on the R&D journey of a rock-entry rotary drilling rig. This was destined to be an exploration full of hardships and challenges. From the meticulous optimization of crowd force and torque, to the optimized selection of drilling tools, to in-depth research on rock fragmentation mechanisms, Liu and his team started almost from zero, accumulating experience bit by bit. They extensively consulted literature and materials, made in-depth visits to multiple construction sites, actively exchanged and discussed with experts and scholars, and conducted tests and improvements day and night.

"Of course, we also experienced repeated failures—one round of rectification after another, and failure after failure again. It took two years before it was finally brought to market," Liu recalled with a touch of emotion. Every failure meant countless days and nights of hard work reduced to nothing; every rectification meant starting all over again to meet new challenges. Yet Liu and his team did not retreat. They always firmly believed that as long as they persevered, they would ultimately achieve final victory.

In the end, after countless tests and improvements, the SR220R rock-entry rotary drilling rig emerged from its cocoon and was successfully launched. This rig can not only easily handle various complex rock strata, but also significantly improves construction efficiency, winning high praise from a broad customer base. The success of the SR220R not only brought considerable economic benefits to SANY, but also injected surging vitality into the development of the entire rotary drilling rig industry.
