Recently, the Longdong–Shandong ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project—China's first ultra-high-voltage transmission project integrating wind, solar, thermal power and energy storage, and constructed with the participation of Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA)—was completed and put into operation. It can transmit 36 billion kWh of wind, photovoltaic, thermal power and stored energy from Gansu Province to Shandong Province each year.

The Longdong–Shandong ±800 kV UHVDC project is the outward transmission project of China's first large-scale integrated energy base featuring the integration of wind, solar, thermal power and energy storage; it is the first UHVDC project to be fully commissioned at full capacity in a single effort, and the first demonstration project to explore and apply the standardized achievements of "double 800" (i.e., ±800 kV rated voltage and 8 million kW rated capacity) UHVDC technology.

The project starts at the Qingyang Converter Station in Gansu and ends at the Dongping Converter Station in Shandong, passing through Shaanxi, Shanxi and Hebei, with a total line length of 934 kilometers. POWERCHINA's subsidiary companies—Shanghai Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., Hebei Engineering Company, Shandong Electric Power Construction No. 1 Company, and Jiangxi Hydropower Company—participated in the construction.

The project newly built two converter stations, at Qingyang in Gansu and Dongping in Shandong, with a transmission capacity of 8 million kW. Among them, the Dongping Converter Station brings together 14 ±800 kV converter transformers and is the first high-end converter station in China to achieve full-chain localization covering "design, type selection, simulation, procurement and manufacturing." It is also the first station of the "Gansu power transmitted to Shandong" project; after the 800 kV UHVDC power arrives in Shandong, it must undergo a series of conversions here before reaching households. The Qingyang Converter Station project is among the first batch of national digital converter station application projects and among China's first batch of projects based on the digital e-Infrastructure 2.0 application.

After the project is put into operation, it can transmit 36 billion kWh of electricity per year from the Longdong "wind, solar, thermal power and energy storage integration" comprehensive energy base in Gansu to Shandong, meeting the annual electricity consumption of more than 10 million households, of which green electricity accounts for 50%. This is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of the Longdong old revolutionary base area, the Shandong region and other areas.
