Recently, the Offshore Wind Turbine Support Structure System Disaster Prevention and Control Team of Shandong University published a paper titled "Cyclic Behavior of China Laizhou Bay Submarine Mucky Clay at an Offshore Wind Turbine Site" in the Journal of Marine Engineering and Environment (JMEE). This study focuses on the cyclic mechanical response of the undisturbed mucky soft soil seabed at an offshore wind farm site in Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, China. The team used equipment such as the GDS standard dynamictriaxial testsystem ELDYN to investigate the cyclic characteristics of the mucky clay at the Laizhou Bay offshore wind farm, revealing its mechanical properties under complex marine environmentsand providing an important reference basis for the foundation design and stability maintenance of offshore wind farms.

The following is a brief introduction to this achievement: Research background and significance
Offshore wind turbine structures are exposed to complex wind-wave-current coupled marine environments over the long term, and seabed materials are highly prone to stiffness degradation, which in turn reduces foundation bearing performance and affects the operational service safety of wind turbines. As the load-bearing body of wind turbine generator systems, offshore wind power foundation structures account for more than 30% of total investment costs and are hailed as the "commanding heights of wind power technology"; their stability is key to ensuring the safety and healthy service of offshore wind turbine structures.
Research methods and results
Through a series of cyclic triaxial tests, the research team analyzed the hysteresis curves and stress path evolution laws of the mucky clay in Laizhou Bay, clarified the effects of different cyclicstress ratios(CSR) and soil burial depth on strain accumulation, pore pressure growth, and stiffness degradation, and identified the load thresholds (critical dynamic stress ratios) that trigger failure of soil at different burial depths. The results show that the mucky clay in this sea area exhibits significant stiffness degradation characteristics under cyclic loading, and the accumulation of dynamic pore pressure has an important influence on soil strength and stiffness.

Application value This study not only helps deepen the scientific understanding of the physical and mechanical behavior of marine soils, but also provides a scientific basis for the foundation design and disaster protection of the Laizhou Bay offshore wind farm, with important theoretical significance and engineering application value. By revealing the cyclic mechanical properties of seabed materials, it provides strong support for the safety design and long-term stability maintenance of offshore wind farm foundation structures.
