Obituary

Liu Jinli, a member of the Communist Party of China, a renowned expert in foundation engineering in China, a national expert with outstanding contributions, an expert enjoyingspecial government allowances of the State Council, former director and consulting chief engineer of the Institute of Foundation Engineering of China Academy of Building Research Co., Ltd., researcher, and doctoral supervisor, passed away after ineffective medical treatment due to illness at 21:30 on April 13, 2025, at the age of 92.

Mr. Liu Jinli was born on June 17, 1933 in Yiyang City, Hunan Province. In 1952, he was admitted through the national unified college entrance examination to the five-year program in Building Structures of the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University. After graduating in 1957, he was assigned to work at the Institute of Foundation Engineering of China Academy of Building Research. In his early career, he was engaged in research on loess foundations, research on the engineering properties of soft soil, and accident handling. In 1983, he served as deputy director of the Institute of Foundation Engineering of China Academy of Building Research, and from 1987 he served as director of the Institute of Foundation Engineering, deputy chief engineer of the Academy, and doctoral supervisor. He was chief editor of the "Code for Design and Construction of Cast-in-Place Pile Foundations for Industrial and Civil Buildings" (JGJ4-80), chief editor of New China's first "Technical Code for Building Pile Foundations" (JGJ94, JGJ94-2008), author of "Pile Foundation Design and Calculation" (published and distributed 6 times) and the "Application Manual of the Technical Code for Building Pile Foundations," and co-author of monographs such as "Guide to Civil Engineering in China" and the "Pile Foundation Engineering Manual." He led the research and development of the "Complete Technology for Post-Grouting of Cast-in-Place Piles," the "Design Method and Treatment Technology for Variable-Stiffness Leveling of High-Rise Building Foundations," and the "Calculation Method for the Interaction between Superstructure and Foundation of High-Rise Buildings with Podiums." He successively served as chairman of the Pile Foundation Academic Committee of the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, chairman of the Foundation Engineering Professional Committee of the China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization, chairman of the Beijing Geotechnical Engineering Professional Committee, and a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

Mr. Liu Jinli devoted himself for a long time to scientific research, engineering practice, and teaching in the field of foundation engineering, and had profound academic attainments and made outstanding contributions in theoretical and applied technology research on pile foundation engineering, loess foundations, and soft soil foundations. He participated in construction consulting and key technology research for a large number of major national projects, and successively won 2 awards from the National Science Conference and 9 Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Construction. In 2012, he received the Mao Yisheng Award for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He published more than 70 papers and trained 9 graduate students. He was rigorous in scholarship, noble in professional ethics, pioneering and enterprising, and selfless in dedication. He is the former director, teacher, and role model in life whom the people of the Institute of Foundation Engineering of China Academy of Building Research will always remember.

The passing of Mr. Liu Jinli is a great loss to the Institute of Foundation Engineering of China Academy of Building Research Co., Ltd., and also a great loss to China's building foundation science and technology cause. We mourn deeply and cherish the memory of Mr. Liu Jinli!

The farewell ceremony for Mr. Liu Jinli is scheduled for8 a.m. on April 17, 2025, in the Mei Hall of Babaoshan Funeral Homeand will be held.
