In megacities, urban safety has always been a focus and difficulty of governance. As an important component of urban space, underground space is being developed on an ever-increasing scale, and deep and large foundation pits are springing up like mushrooms after rain. However, the surrounding environment of these deep and large foundation pits is sensitive, and safety risk control is extremely difficult. Traditional foundation pit monitoring methods suffer from low efficiency, high cost, slow processing, and poor traceability, and can no longer meet the requirements of refined management in modern cities.
Against this background,SGIDI (Shanghai Geotechnical Investigations & Design Institute)leveraging its profound technical accumulation and innovation capability, independently developed a multi-dimensional dynamic risk early-warning technology for deep foundation pit monitoring based on integrated sensing-communication-computing technologyproviding strong technical support for safety control in urban underground space development.

Precise Sensing
The "clairvoyance" for deep foundation pit risks
Monitoring of deep foundation pits requires precise sensing of their multi-dimensional dynamic risks. SGIDI has comprehensively applied new sensing technologies such as MEMS, fiber-optic sensing, holographic monitoring, and SLAM to achieve precise sensing and rapid identification of multi-dimensional dynamic risks in deep foundation pits. These advanced sensing technologies act like a "clairvoyance",enabling real-time monitoring of key parameters such as deformation, stress, and seepage of the foundation pit, providing accurate data support for subsequent risk assessment and early warning.
For example, in the underground project of the South Zone of Phase IV of Shanghai Pudong Airport, the SGIDI team for the first time applied integrated sensing-communication-computing digital technology throughout the entire monitoring process, applying automated inclinometry and fiber Bragg grating technology to the monitoring of 80-meter-deep ultra-deep diaphragm walls, achieving sub-millimeter-precision sensing of lateral deformation in ultra-deep foundation pitsproviding a solid guarantee for the safe construction of the project.
Stable Communication
The "expressway" for data transmission
Sensed data needs to be transmitted efficiently and stably to the monitoring platform to realize its value. SGIDI has established a unified data frame encapsulation format based on parameters such as acquisition method and data type, achieving modularized integrated acquisition of multiple sensors in deep foundation pitsAt the same time, based on low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN), it has established an engineering IoT network with bidirectional stable transmission and low latency suitable for deep foundation pit scenarios, achieving efficient wireless communication among multiple sensing nodes.
This stable communication network acts like an "expressway",ensuring that massive monitoring data can be transmitted to the monitoring platform in real time and accuratelyIn the underground project of the South Zone of Phase IV of Shanghai Pudong Airport, the SGIDI team used wireless monitoring and bidirectional-control "self-organizing network" communication technology to achieve wireless integration and automatic data upload of more than 20,000 on-site sensors of more than 10 models, greatly improving monitoring efficiency and data real-time performance.

Intelligent Computing
The "smart brain" for risk early warning
Only after intelligent analysis and processing can monitored data be converted into useful information to provide a basis for risk early warning. To address the problem of passive/lagged risk response at monitoring sites, SGIDIestablished a monitoring risk control platform with multi-source data fusionand, based on intelligent algorithms such as edge computing and knowledge graphs, achievedactive, sensitive response and precise early warning for deep foundation pit risk events.
This platform acts like a"smart brain"that can analyze monitoring data in real time, identify potential risk factors, and issue early warning information in a timely mannerbuying time for engineering personnel to take effective risk control measures. In the underground project of the South Zone of Phase IV of Shanghai Pudong Airport, based on intelligent algorithms combining cloud and edge, active response and automatic early warning for deep foundation pits were achieved, greatly improving on-site work efficiency, reducing labor costs, and enhancing the risk control level for super-large deep foundation pits.

Successful Application
The "safety guardian" of major projects
SGIDI's integrated sensing-communication-computing multi-dimensional dynamic risk assessment and early-warning technology system and complete set of equipment for deep foundation pits have been successfully promoted and applied in deep and large foundation pit group projects such as the underground project of the South Zone of Phase IV of Shanghai Pudong Airport, Shanghai East Railway Station, and the 480m super high-rise in North Bund.
These projects are characterized bylarge scale, deep excavation, long construction period, numerous processes, extensive cross-operation, and large spanswhich impose extremely high requirements on safety risk control. SGIDI's technical achievements have played an important role in these projects, providing technical support for risk control of major projects and refined urban governance, and comprehensively promoting the digital transformation and development of the monitoring industry. With the acceleration of urbanization and the continuous deepening of underground space development,SGIDI's technical achievements will be applied in more cities and projects, safeguarding the safe development of cities.
Founded in 1958 and headquartered in Shanghai, SGIDI is a technology-based engineering consulting enterprise featuring geotechnical engineering, with coordinated multi-disciplinary development, providing integrated technologies and distinctive services for national capital construction and urban operation management. It has undertaken a series of major construction tasks in Shanghai and received numerous honors and awards, and is known as the "underground vanguard" of Shanghai's urban construction and the pacesetter in the development of the survey and design industry in Shanghai and across the countryIn the future, the group will continue to increase investment in technology R&D, persist in innovation, and further improve the integrated sensing-communication-computing multi-dimensional dynamic risk early-warning technology system for deep foundation pit monitoring, providing safety guarantees for more urban underground space development projects.
