Recently, the compressor foundations for Unit 2 of the Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation Phase II Project, constructed by SEPCO1, have all been poured, laying a solid foundation for the main powerhouse reaching the zero-meter level and for superstructure construction.
The compression system of Unit 2 of the project adopts a dual-train parallel compressor configuration, requiring the installation of 8 large air compressors in total, with 4 compressor foundations arranged in sequence in each train. All are mass concrete structures, with relatively small spacing between foundations and difficult construction locations. In response, the project team organized and planned carefully, scientifically and reasonably optimized the construction sequence, and adopted segmented pouring to ensure space for formwork erection and reinforcement. The team strengthened professional work standard training for personnel and safety technical briefings; each foundation used methods such as layered continuous pouring, temperature monitoring systems, and automated curing. During the process, special technical compliance governance and rectification of common engineering quality problems were carried out in depth to ensure the formed quality of the foundations.
The Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation Phase II Project is building two sets of 350 MW non-supplementary-fired compressed air energy storage units, with a total salt cavern gas storage volume of 1.2 million cubic meters. The project breaks through bottleneck technology barriers and will develop and install the world's most advanced air turbine and compressor units, achieving 100% localization of core equipment. When the power station charges, electric motors drive the compressors to compress air and store it in the salt caverns, and the compression-side heat exchange system stores the compression heat. When the power station generates electricity, the expansion-side heat exchanger heats the compressed air released from the salt caverns, which then enters the air turbine generator to produce electricity.
It is reported that the project is currently the compressed air energy storage power station with the world's largest single-unit power, largest total capacity, and highest comprehensive efficiency. A single charge can store 2.8 million kWh of electricity, with an estimated 330 charge-discharge cycles per year, equivalent to saving 270,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 520,000 tons.
