"Scientific and technological innovation and keeping pace with the times" is the only way to revitalize China and one of the keys to ensuring that our country forever stands among the nations of the world. As an important calling card of China, the field of civil engineering has rich nourishment and accumulation, with endless stories of great civil engineering. These stories are a microcosm of the era; however great the era, so moving are the stories.
Today, we take you into the China Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Award-winning project —Yueqing Bay Bridge and Approach Project in Zhejiang Province— to appreciate the story of scientific and technological innovation in China's civil engineering in the new era.
Project Overview
The Yueqing Bay Bridge and Approach Project in Zhejiang Province is an important component of the national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network G1523 Yongguan Expressway and the "one vertical" of Zhejiang Province's "nine verticals, nine horizontals, five rings, five corridors and multiple links" expressway network, and is also one of the first batch of quality engineering construction demonstration projects in Zhejiang Province. The route starts at Shatoumen, Chengnan Town, Wenling, Taizhou City, crosses Taizhou and Wenzhou Cities, and ends at the Nantang Interchange where it connects with the G15 Shenhai Expressway, with a total length of 38.168 km. The project's final account investment was 9.593 billion yuan.
The Yueqing Bay Sea-Crossing Bridgeis the controlling works of this project, with a total length of about 10 km. The No. 1 navigable span bridge adopts precast segmental assembled variable-depth continuous rigid frame, with a span arrangement of 85+2×150+85 (m), and was the world's largest-span V-shaped rigid frame and precast concrete girder bridge at that time. The navigable span bridge of Bridge No. 2 adopts a double-tower full-width composite girder cable-stayed bridge, with a span arrangement of (70+90+365+90+70) m = 685 m; the cable towers adopt a diamond-shaped tower body, which is aesthetically pleasing; the superstructure main girder adopts a PK steel box composite girder, whose cross-section form has a small wind resistance coefficient, giving it good adaptability to this bridge's location in a typhoon-prone area. The non-navigable span bridges adopt 60 m precast segmental assembled constant-depth continuous box girders. The superstructure main girders of the entire bridge all adopt the construction scheme of factory prefabrication and on-site assembly, avoiding the impact of the harsh climate environment at the bridge site on construction quality and achieving standardized design, factory production and prefabricated construction. The engineering design emphasizes ecological and environmental protection, fully considering the living habits of birds in structural form and innovation; before and after the project's operation, there was basically no impact on the seasonal birds of Xuanmen Bay Wetland Park, achieving harmonious coexistence with the natural environment. The engineering design won the First Prize in the Comprehensive Category of the 2020 Zhejiang Province Survey and Design Industry Excellent Survey and Design Awards and the First Prize of the 2020 Highway Transportation Excellent Design Awards; the engineering survey won the First Prize in the Comprehensive Category of the 2021 Zhejiang Province Survey and Design Industry Excellent Survey and Design Awards.
The project started construction on July 29, 2014, and was completed and opened to traffic on July 28, 2018. On August 27, 2021, it passed the completion acceptance of the Ministry of Transport, with the engineering quality grade rated as excellent, and won the Zhejiang Province Construction Project Qianjiang Cup Award (Quality Project), the CCCC Quality Project Award, the China Railway Cup Quality Project Award, and the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize (National Quality Project).

Scientific and Technological Innovation and Application of New Technologies
A new technology of multi-box asynchronous loading was pioneered and invented, thereby extending the self-balanced testing method for pile foundations, solving thepost-groutingproblem of bearing capacity testing of deep and long large-diameter piles under complex environments, and overcoming the difficulty of organically unifying the safety and economy of deep and long pile foundation engineering. For the first time in expressway construction, post-grouting at the pile tip was adopted on a large scale to replace pile length, effectively shortening the pile length by more than 20,000 meters and saving about 59.23 million yuan in project cost.
An intelligent pile-tip post-grouting system was developed, a complete set of process standards was formulated, design standards for pile-tip post-grouting under coastal conditions were proposed, and digital management of the concealed grouting works was realized for the first time.
A dual-method monitoring and bidirectional matching technology was invented and applied to the prefabrication of segmental girders; a new pier-top segment positioning technology based on Cartesian coordinates and a new guided fine-tuning process were pioneered, achieving "millimeter-level" closure of segmental girders in shim-free cantilever assembly; a dedicated four-dimensional matrix 4DM safety supervision system for segmental girder launching gantries was developed, filling a gap in the industry and successfully forging the engineering quality of "millimeters achieving ten thousand meters," laying the foundation for the promotion and application of the short-line method precast assembly process for bridges.
A bidirectional electromigration technology for concrete structures — "chloride removal, rust inhibition, crack repair and nano-reinforcement" — was pioneered, solving the technical challenge of controlling the hydrogen embrittlement risk of steel reinforcement, breaking through the restriction on the application of electrochemical technology in prestressed concrete structures, achieving a fivefold increase in the critical current density for hydrogen evolution, and successfully applying it to the box girders and pier bodies of sea-crossing bridges, greatly extending the service life of structures in marine areas, with the durability enhancement technology reaching the international leading level.
A deformation-body-based calculation theory for bridge overturning resistance was proposed, design criteria for girder bridges of "strong overturning resistance and weak bending" were established, the overturning stability safety factor when structural strength matches overturning resistance bearing capacity was derived, and it was applied to ramp single-column pier bridges such as the Nantang Interchange, avoiding obvious overturning resistance shortcomings or excessive overturning resistance design in bridge design and achieving the optimal solution for both engineering safety and economy.
BIM technology was applied to the full life-cycle construction of extra-large bridges, realizing multi-dimensional management information collaboration and multi-scenario, high-demand application of the "BIM+" series of functions, promoting the in-depth popularization and promotion of the "smart construction site" concept, and leading the application of BIM technology in bridges.
