Introduction

On March 4 and 5, the third session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) opened respectively at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Premier Li Qiang, on behalf of the State Council, delivered the Government Work Report to the third session of the 14th NPC.

The report sparked lively discussion across all sectors of society; it is not only a report card for 2024 but also a grand blueprint for development in 2025. Key messages in the report, such as "promoting the integrated development of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation," "adhering to innovation-led development," and "accelerating the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development," are closely related to the bridge industry. Many participating representatives and industry experts offered suggestions and expressed their views on related topics.

Liu Wei, NPC deputy and Minister of Transport

On the morning of March 5, at the first "Ministers' Corridor" group interview held after the opening meeting of the third session of the 14th NPC, Liu Wei said:"In terms of first-class technology, China's high-speed rail, China's roads, China's bridges, China's ports, and China's express delivery have all become shining Chinese calling cards."

Liu Wei said that, looking at China's bridges, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the world's longest sea-crossing bridge, and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, which opened to traffic last year, is one of the world's sea-crossing cluster projects with the highest overall construction difficulty; its completion has completely changed the overall road network layout of the Pearl River Estuary.

Qin Shunquan, Standing Committee member of the CPPCC National Committee, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and chief scientist of China Railway

Qin Shunquanproposed while attending the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee thatthe construction of "application"-oriented science and technology innovation supply chain platforms should be strengthened to promote deep integration of science and technology with industry.

Gao Zongyu, NPC deputy, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, chief scientist of China Railway, and director of the State Key Laboratory of Bridge Intelligent and Green Construction

After listening to the Government Work Report,Gao Zongyuwas deeply encouraged. Gao Zongyu said that promoting the integrated development of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation and continuing to advance actions such as "AI+" will surely give a strong boost to the development of new quality productive forces.

Regarding the future development of the bridge industry, Gao Zongyu suggested, first, accelerating the cultivation of specialized professionals in intelligent construction, interdisciplinary talents, and leading talents; second, supporting traditional construction enterprises in stepping up technological transformation and intelligent upgrading of equipment, and promoting the rebuilding of industrial foundations and the enhancement of original innovation capacity.

Promoting the deep integration of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation is an important part of comprehensively advancing Chinese modernization. Over the past two years, the construction industry has faced a slowdown in the growth rate of total output value and a decline in growth margin, as well as problems such as labor shortages and slow productivity improvement. The bridge industry should adhere to an "application"-oriented approach, focus on promoting the transformation of scientific and technological innovation into industrial achievements and accelerating the transformation of innovative resources into industrial advantages, vigorously develop intelligent construction, and drive the bridge industry's transformation and upgrading toward high-end, intelligent, and green development.

In recent years, "China's bridges" have continuously set new world records, erecting one bridge monument after another, and the "China's bridges" brand has become ever more polished. The Government Work Report also proposed deepening efforts in the manufacturing sector to "increase variety, improve quality, and create brands," strengthening comprehensive quality management, and building famous premium products and classic industries.

The world's bridges look to China, and China's bridges connect the world. "China's bridges" not only scale technological heights domestically but also "set sail overseas," yielding results in more than 20 countries and regions along the Belt and Road, including Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, and Morocco. This not only demonstrates China's bridge-building strength but also polishes the international brand of "China's bridges."
