On February 27, Unit 2 of the Huaneng Zhengning 2×1000 MW peak-shaving coal power project—the world's first "five towers in one" million-kilowatt unit—undertaken by Shandong Electric Power Construction No. 1 Company, was successfully ignited and started up. All parameters were excellent, laying a solid foundation for the unit's subsequent grid connection and power generation, and earning unanimous praise from the owner and the supervision unit.

The Huaneng Zhengning project is part of the "Gansu Power Transmission to Shandong" initiative and one of the major projects identified for implementation in the National 14th Five-Year Plan Outline and the Yellow River Basin Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development Plan. Through integrated planning, construction, and operation of wind, solar, thermal, and storage, the project builds supporting expanded and upgraded 4 million kW of peak-shaving coal power, 6.5 million kW of wind power, 4 million kW of photovoltaic power, and 1 million kW (2-hour) of energy storage. Once completed, it will transmit 40 billion kWh of electricity annually. The Huaneng Zhengning 2×1000 MW peak-shaving coal power project is the world's first to adopt a "five towers in one" system integrating the main unit cooling tower, auxiliary cooling tower, desulfurization absorber tower, CCUS system raw flue, and chimney. Leveraging the abundant coal, wind, and solar resources of the Longdong region and the advantages of the "Gansu Power Transmission to Shandong" corridor, it is dedicated to building a green, environmentally friendly, energy-saving, efficient, and high-performance multi-energy complementary integrated energy base with green smart peak-shaving power sources. It is a demonstration project for promoting clean and efficient development, conversion, and utilization of coal, supporting the achievement of the "dual carbon" goals, and building a new-type power system. As an important component of the Huaneng Longdong multi-energy complementary integrated energy base, the project, once completed, will enable local conversion of coal resources in the Longdong region and support the rapid economic development of the Qingyang revolutionary old area. The ignition and startup of Unit 2 of the Huaneng Zhengning project marks the beginning of trial operation of the unit, with the project entering its final completion stage. After both units are fully connected to the grid, they will consume more than 3.6 million tons of raw coal annually, generate more than 10 billion kWh of electricity per year, and produce an annual output value exceeding 3 billion yuan, using approximately 2.7 million cubic meters of drainage water. This is of great significance for promoting the deep transformation of local resource advantages into economic advantages. At the same time, it will give full play to flexible regulation and backstop guarantee roles, address the intermittency and volatility issues of large-scale new energy power generation, and support the safe and stable operation of the "Gansu Power Transmission to Shandong" ultra-high-voltage line.
