On February 25, the Zhongdianjian Feicheng 2×300 MW (Phase I) Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Station project, invested in and constructed by PowerChina New Energy Company, reached an important milestone—the first batch of concrete was successfully poured for the main powerhouse, marking the project's official entry into the main construction phase.

The Zhongdianjian Feicheng 2×300 MW (Phase I) Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Station is China's first new-type energy storage station to adopt 300 MW-class full-water-medium large-capacity high-temperature high-pressure non-supplementary-fired advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage technology. Since obtaining the Shandong provincial construction project filing certificate in November 2023, the project has been selected for Shandong Province's list of major implementation projects for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, and was listed as a key promoted compressed air energy storage project in the Shandong Provincial Energy Administration's "2024 Key Work Points for Provincial Energy Transition," demonstrating its core position in the region's energy transition.

The project is located in the Energy Storage Industrial Park of the Feicheng Economic Development Zone in Shandong, covering an area of approximately 221 mu. It is planned to install two 300 MW/1,800 MWh compressed air energy storage units, with a heat storage temperature of up to 224°C, a charging duration of 8 hours, a power generation duration of 6 hours, and a designed charge-discharge efficiency exceeding 70%. The medium temperature, main air parameters, and unit scale all reach the largest in China and internationally leading levels, featuring notable advantages such as a simple system, high efficiency, low investment, and low operation and maintenance costs.

The power station introduces the concept of digital-intelligent power station construction, taking digitalization as the foundation and intelligence as the core to achieve full-lifecycle intelligent management from design and construction to operation and maintenance. At the same time, it has pioneered more than ten key technologies, including renovation and evaluation technology for energy storage caverns in complex old cavities of high-pressure-bearing salt caverns, high-temperature high-pressure sequential cyclic heat storage equipment and control technology, constant-temperature control technology for expansion power generation, long-distance high-pressure salt-bearing air transmission technology, and deep utilization technology of waste heat. Guided by six categories of demonstrations—process systems, premium projects, core equipment, full-process digital intelligence, green and low-carbon technologies, and comprehensive utilization of salt caverns—it is at the domestic leading level in three key indicators: installed capacity, conversion efficiency, and investment level.

After the project is completed, it is expected to deliver an average annual on-grid electricity volume of 1.188 billion kWh. As important infrastructure supporting the new power system, it will effectively meet the new system balancing demands brought about by the large-scale integration of local new energy and the upgrading of users' energy consumption patterns, and provide the grid with flexible and efficient peak-shaving, frequency regulation, and reserve capacity services. It will not only significantly enhance the regulation capability of the regional power grid, but also promote the large-scale application of China's new energy storage technologies, providing strong support for building a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient modern energy system and achieving the "dual carbon" goals.
