At the start of the new year, all things take on a new look. At the construction frontline of the "most difficult tunnel" of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project—the Xianglushan Tunnel—machines roar and vehicles shuttle to and fro, as the vast number of builders, with full vigor, race against time to overcome difficulties and fight with all their strength.
At the first light of dawn, at the Dali Section I Lot 3 project of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project in Heqing County, after the team leader briefed the day's safety precautions and construction tasks, this group of people who "bore through the great mountains" once again began their day-after-day arduous journey.
Located at the head of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project, the 63.1-kilometer-long Xianglushan Tunnel represents the most arduous and most difficult part of the project, encompassing almost all geological challenges of underground construction. The project construction faces major engineering geological and environmental geological problems such as karst groundwater, active faults, high in-situ stress, and large deformation of soft rock, as well as world-class technical challenges including difficult construction of deep-buried tunnels, difficult groundwater treatment, difficult crossing of fractured fault zones, difficult response to large deformation of soft rock, difficult earthquake protection, difficult handling of rockburst hazards, difficult prevention and control of toxic and harmful gases, difficult comprehensive treatment of geothermal hazards, and difficult TBM manufacturing processes. The construction difficulty is rarely seen in the world.
The Xianglushan Tunnel of Lot 3 of the Dali Section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project, undertaken by China Railway Tunnel Group, is a key control project for the entire line of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project. The tunnel construction involves many unfavorable geological conditions, great technical difficulty, and high construction risk, making it a typical super-large, super-long, and super-difficult project. The tunnel works of the lot adopt a combination of the "Yunling" TBM (9.83 meters in diameter), the largest cross-section TBM in the world's water diversion projects, and the drill-and-blast method, with the TBM driving a single-head excavation of 20.8 kilometers.
Since the "Yunling" TBM began excavation, it has encountered the interleaved effects of extreme geological risks such as hard-rock rockbursts, sudden water inrushes, the Qincaitang fault zone, the Heqing-Eryuan F12 active major fault, and large deformation of soft rock. The major national equipment that once forged ahead bravely was once stalled in excavation and even lifted and overturned due to extremely high in-situ stress.
To continue maintaining the vigorous momentum of construction and fully guarantee construction progress, the personnel of the Dali Section I Lot 3 project of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project did not stop work during the Spring Festival. They organized production scientifically and orderly, formulated detailed construction plans, reasonably established incentive plans, and went all out to advance the "Yunling" TBM toward the next milestone.
Wang Xulong, a 23-year-old safety officer, has just completed his probationary period and been formally appointed. As a "newcomer," he stayed at the construction site during the Spring Festival, responsible for on-site safety duty work. "Choosing this profession means choosing dedication and perseverance. During the Spring Festival there are fewer people on site, but the safety responsibility is not light, and no detail can be relaxed," Wang Xulong said. Deep in the bottomless tunnel, builders like Wang Xulong shuttle among the various working faces, meticulously inspecting every possible safety hazard. Their figures shine brightly on the construction site, becoming a unique scenery in the spring days.
At the construction site of Xianglushan No. 4 Adit of Lot 2 of the Lijiang Section, the roar resounded through the tunnel, and dazzling floodlights shone on the tunnel face. "For every meter forward, it drops 50 centimeters; after advancing 50 meters, there is a height difference of 25 meters, about the height of eight or nine stories. The entire adit is 1,132 meters, so walking it once is equivalent to climbing 150 stories." From the vivid description of the project manager, the reporter learned that it is precisely this 27.1-degree inclination that makes No. 4 Adit of Lot 2 of the Lijiang Section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project, undertaken by Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co., Ltd., the "steepest inclined shaft" on the entire line of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project.
Since the Spring Festival, all participants of the Project Department of Construction Lot 2 of the Lijiang Section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project have stayed on the construction frontline. The site still operates 24-hour shift work, and by optimizing process connections and strengthening material support, normal construction at each working face is ensured, and the project is advancing smoothly and orderly.
Striking the water for three thousand li, striving to be in the forefront. Under the all-out efforts of the vast participating units and builders, the construction of this largest "roadblock" project on the entire line of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project continues to refresh its "progress bar."
Up to now, the Xianglushan Tunnel has been excavated for a cumulative 37.8 kilometers, of which the main tunnel has been excavated for 26.1 kilometers, accounting for 41.4% of the total length of 63.1 kilometers.
At the start of the new year, we begin with solid work. In this "underground maze" where Class IV and Class V surrounding rock along the line accounts for more than 92%, with complex and fractured geology, intricate and disordered structures, and traps everywhere, the Yunnan Provincial Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project Construction Administration Bureau and Yunnan Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project Co., Ltd. thoroughly implement the decisions and arrangements of the provincial Party committee and provincial government, and unite and lead the vast participating units to ride the momentum, go all out, hold fast to the goals, and forge ahead with the posture of striving, the state of seizing opportunities, and the normalcy of solid work.
