Innovation Points (1) The carbon emission accounting methods for highway construction are systematically reviewed, and the characteristics, differences, and applicability of different methods are identified, providing a basis for establishing more accurate and widely applicable carbon emission accounting methods. (2) Carbon reduction measures at the emission end of highway geotechnical engineering are summarized and analyzed. From both endogenous and exogenous perspectives, carbon reduction methods such as green geotechnical technology, solid waste resource utilization technology, and refined management of earthworks are elaborated. (3) Carbon compensation measures at the carbon sequestration end of highway geotechnical engineering are summarized from two aspects: slope vegetation carbon sequestration and the application of new carbon sequestration materials. It is pointed out that the combination of compensation measures and carbon sequestration effect evaluation methods helps achieve the goal of sustainable ecological development in the road domain. (4) Future research trends in the direction of highway transportation carbon emission reduction are analyzed, encouraging interdisciplinary integration to improve the accuracy and reliability of data, develop new emission reduction technologies, and develop more diversified compensation technologies. Research Background In recent years, carbon emissions and extreme climate issues have become major topics of global concern. TheParis Agreementsigned in 2015 calls for a substantial reduction of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions in the 21st century and sets clear decarbonization targets worldwide. More than 150 countries responded to the call and successively announced their respective emission reduction commitments. China has also proposed the "dual carbon" strategy, namely achieving carbon peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. According to reports in the People's Daily, emissions from the transportation sector account for approximately 10% of China's total carbon emissions. Scholars have found that carbon dioxide emissions from highway construction and maintenance account for approximately 5%-25% of total transportation carbon emissions, among which the proportion of geotechnical engineering cannot be ignored. Therefore, further understanding the current status of carbon emissions in China's highway construction and strengthening carbon reduction in geotechnical engineering are important tasks for realizing the "dual carbon" strategy and addressing climate change. At present, low-carbon research on highway construction mainly focuses on three aspects: carbon emission accounting, geotechnical engineering carbon reduction measures, and carbon compensation technology. There are various carbon emission accounting methods, involving life cycle assessment (LCA)theory, the emission factor method, the mass balance method, etc. Among them, the emission factor method is widely used in practical engineering because of its simple operation. Highway geotechnical carbon reduction measures include emission reduction and compensation from both the emission end and the carbon sequestration end. Emission-end carbon reduction technologies mainly reduce carbon emissions through green geotechnical technology, solid waste resource utilization technology, and green engineering management, while carbon sequestration-end compensation enhances carbon sinks and improves slope ecological functions through measures such as slope greening and ecological restoration. There has already been a large amount of research work around low-carbon theories and technologies for highway construction. This paper systematically reviews previous research results from the aspects of carbon emission accounting for highway construction, highway geotechnical carbon reduction measures, carbon compensation technology, and effect evaluation, extracts research highlights and future development trends, provides references for the formulation of carbon neutrality policies in the highway transportation field, and promotes the sustainable development of highway transportation infrastructure construction. Abstract The transportation sector is one of the main sources of global carbon emissions. As a major transportation country, China faces enormous challenges in transportation carbon emission reduction. In recent years, scholars have carried out extensive research on carbon emission accounting and emission reduction measures. Focusing on the highway construction stage, this paper reviews previous studies from three aspects: carbon emission accounting, emission-end carbon reduction, and carbon sequestration-end compensation. The results show that most carbon emission accounting methods use the LCAlife cycle theorymodel, running through the entire highway construction stage. Among them, basic data accounting is concentrated on the emission factor method, as well as tools such as software and platforms combined with artificial intelligence. Emission-end carbon reduction mainly revolves around three aspects: green geotechnical technology, solid waste resource utilization technology, and green and efficient engineering management, achieving the goal of carbon reduction from the source. Carbon compensation research includes carbon sequestration-end compensation measures and carbon sequestration effect evaluation. Carbon compensation measures focus on two aspects: using photosynthesis of slope vegetation to sequester carbon and using new materials to increase carbon sinks. Carbon sequestration effects are evaluated using a combination of subjective and objective analysis methods. Through analysis, it is found that current research still has problems that urgently need to be solved, such as the lack of unified standards for emission factors, which leads to large accounting errors; the lack of comprehensive evaluation methods for the specific emission reduction ratios of emission reduction measures, and insufficient integration with artificial intelligence; carbon compensation measures are not rich enough, and carbon sequestration effect evaluation methods are highly subjective. Future research should focus on the accuracy of accounting methods; propose more effective carbon emission reduction measures and strengthen research on emission reduction effect evaluation; adopt more diversified carbon compensation measures and establish generally applicable compensation effect evaluation methods. This review paper can provide a more comprehensive reference for carbon emission reduction research in the transportation geotechnical field and help achieve the "dual carbon" strategic goals.
