Some people turned reunion into celebrating the New Year in place, while others turned their journey home into staying at their posts. The author connected with the Thailand Rama III cable undergrounding project of Jiangxi Hydropower International Company, thousands of miles away, and learned that during the Spring Festival, Chinese and foreign employees worked together at their posts, going all out to advance the project construction. Although they could not return home to reunite with their families, the project department organized a rich variety of activities so that employees could feel the strong festive atmosphere of the New Year.
Before the Spring Festival, the project department gave employees an early holiday and organized them to prepare in advance for the New Year's Eve dinner. In the kitchen, Chinese and foreign employees, whether they knew how to make dumplings or not, all gathered together—some making dumplings with various fillings, some rolling out wrappers—people from all over with all kinds of skills, each different, yet gathered together as close as one family. Next, everyone found their own ingredients—some made fried meatballs, some braised beef, some steamed fish... all showing off their signature dishes in preparing the New Year's Eve dinner, each displaying their own talents.
To add to the festive atmosphere, the Chinese employees warmly invited their Thai colleagues to put up fu characters and hang Spring Festival couplets together, explained to them the meaning of the Chinese Spring Festival, and presented them in advance with "New Year goods gift packs," so that they could jointly experience the rich and joyful atmosphere of this traditional Chinese festival.
"I really like China; the culture there is so charming. I hope that one day I can go to China again to celebrate the Spring Festival..." Thai worker K.Panupong said as he happily put up Spring Festival couplets, expressing his wish.
"No matter where you celebrate the New Year, watching the Spring Festival Gala is one of the New Year activities." Project manager Wang Bo, together with two others, arranged tables and chairs in the meeting room, set up the television and adjusted the channel, making preparations in advance for watching the Spring Festival Gala on New Year's Eve.
The project's Chinese employees brought these traditional customs with Chinese characteristics to a foreign land, enabling foreign employees to also feel the unique charm of the Chinese Spring Festival. This cultural exchange not only brought Chinese and foreign employees closer together, but also reflected Jiangxi Hydropower's efforts overseas to practice the "Belt and Road" initiative and promote China-Thailand cultural exchange.
