The filling core construction of the east anchorage of the Shiziyang Bridge, one of the most technically difficult and most complex bridges in the world to build, has been completed.
As 2024 enters its final days, major infrastructure projects in Guangdong are drawing their bows to the full and sprinting toward the finish. On December 20, following the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Passage, another mega project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—the Shiziyang Passage project—unveiled yet another milestone. The filling core construction of the east anchorage of the Shiziyang Bridge, a key controlling project of the passage and one of the most technically difficult and most complex bridges in the world to build, was successfully completed, equivalent to the weight of six large aircraft carriers. In addition, at the end of December, the west anchorage of the Shiziyang Bridge will also complete the final layer of filling core construction, marking that the construction of the Shiziyang Passage will enter a new stage.
The weight of the filling core is equivalent to six large aircraft carriers.
As a massive component that secures the ends of the main cables of a suspension bridge and prevents their displacement, the anchorage is crucial to bridge safety.
The main bridge of the Shiziyang Passage, the Shiziyang Bridge, has east and west anchorages. The east anchorage of the Shiziyang Bridge adopts a unique circular gravity-type design, with a total filling core height of 21.5 meters. Since the filling core construction began on July 8 this year, a total of 164 days have elapsed, during which the project construction team completed 192,000 cubic meters of concrete pouring for the east anchorage, with a single continuous pour reaching as high as 18,000 cubic meters, totaling 476,000 tons of filling core, equivalent to the weight of six large aircraft carriers.
In mass concrete construction, temperature control is a critical element.
"Advanced intelligent integrated temperature control technology was adopted in the filling core construction of the east anchorage. Through a dense network of cooling water pipes and an automatic temperature control system, precise real-time monitoring and dynamic regulation of concrete temperature were achieved," introduced Lu Zisheng, deputy project manager of the T9 contract section of the Shiziyang Passage under Poly Changda.
Through the intelligent integrated temperature control technology, the project construction team effectively solved the temperature control challenge in mass concrete construction, ensuring that the internal temperature of the concrete always remained within a safe range, effectively preventing the occurrence of temperature cracks, and greatly improving the overall quality of the concrete structure.
New materials and new technologies intelligently create a giant "core".
"During the filling core construction, the project construction team adopted multiple innovative technologies," introduced Zhang Taike, chief engineer of Guangdong Bay Area Transportation Construction Investment Co., Ltd. The application of C40 anti-erosion concrete improved the impermeability and crack resistance of the concrete; crack-resistant steel mesh was installed to enhance the crack resistance of the concrete; and before pouring, block-staggered complementary measures were taken to effectively enhance the overall waterproofing effect of the concrete. Under multiple protective measures, the filling core concrete of the east anchorage has better durability and stability and can withstand the test of various complex environments over the long term.
As the controlling project of the passage, the Shiziyang Bridge adopts a double-deck steel truss suspension bridge scheme with a main span of 2,180 meters, "crossing the river in a single span." It is currently one of the most technically difficult and most complex bridges in the world to build, and once completed it will set five world records for a double-deck suspension bridge: main span length, number of lanes, main tower height, anchorage foundation, and main cable scale.
With the successful completion of the filling core construction of the east anchorage, at the end of December the west anchorage, constructed by CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd., will also complete the final layer of filling core construction. The successful completion of the filling cores of the two giant anchorages marks that the construction of the Shiziyang Passage has entered a new stage.
The Shiziyang Passage is another mega project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. Once completed, it will open up a new important corridor for the integrated development of the east and west banks of the Pearl River Estuary, and is of great significance for advancing the integrated high-quality development of the Pearl River Estuary in the Greater Bay Area and building the 100-kilometer "Golden Inner Bay" around the Pearl River Estuary.
