On December 18, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase II Project of the Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation project—the world's largest compressed air energy storage power station, in which Shandong Electric Power Construction No.1 Company participated as a construction party—was held in Changzhou, Jiangsu, marking the official start of construction of the project.
The Phase II Project of the Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation project, located in Jintan District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is a key project of Jiangsu Province. It is planned to build two sets of 350 MW non-supplementary-fired compressed air energy storage units, with 8 hours of energy storage and 4 hours of power generation. The energy conversion efficiency will exceed 70%, and a single charge can store 2.8 million kWh of electricity, enough to meet the charging demand of 100,000 new energy vehicles. The project has broken through bottleneck technical barriers, developed and manufactured the world's most advanced air turbine and compressor units, and achieved 100% localization of core equipment. Shandong Electric Power Construction No.1 Company is responsible for the construction and installation works of Unit #2.
It is reported that this project is currently the compressed air energy storage power station with the largest single-unit capacity, the largest total capacity, and the highest comprehensive efficiency in the world. After completion, the project will generate 924 million kWh of electricity annually, save more than 270,000 tons of standard coal per year, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 520,000 tons. It will further fill the gap in the commercial application of large-scale compressed air energy storage in China, contribute energy storage support to promoting the high-quality development of Jiangsu Province's energy industry, help achieve the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goals, serve the national energy security strategy, and make positive contributions to promoting the upgrading of China's energy structure and sustainable development.
