On December 10, good news came from the Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub Project located in Zhongxiang City, Hubei Province. Since operation began, the project has cumulatively generated nearly 600 million kWh of electricity, handled nearly 7,000 vessels, and supplied 240 million cubic meters of water, making important contributions to regional economic development and people's livelihood.
The Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub is an important component of the Han River cascade development plan recommended in the Yangtze River Basin Comprehensive Plan approved by the State Council. It has been included in the Overall Arrangement Opinions on National Large and Medium-sized Reservoir Construction (2013-2015) and has been incorporated into the 172 major water conservation and water supply projects designated by the State Council.
The development tasks of the project are mainly power generation and navigation, with consideration given to irrigation and water supply. The total reservoir capacity is 877 million cubic meters, the total installed capacity of the power station is 180 megawatts, the irrigation area is 462,900 mu, the annual water supply is approximately 100 million cubic meters, and the annual output of green clean energy is 616 million kWh.
Wang Weiwei, Deputy Director of the Hubei Provincial Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub Project Construction Management Bureau (Preparatory), introduced that the Nianpanshan Hub is an important component of the Han River cascade. The construction of the project can provide high-quality clean energy while opening up the Han River golden waterway and promoting the rapid development of the Han River Economic Belt.
The Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub is a large (II)-type, Class II project. The hub mainly includes hydraulic structures such as sluice gates, ship locks, a power station, a concrete dam, and a fishway. The design and construction involve many specialties, the engineering technology is difficult, and the construction period is tight.
The design flood standard for the project is a 100-year return period, with a maximum flood flow of 27,700 cubic meters per second and a unit-width discharge of the sluice gates of 86 cubic meters per second. The ship lock is the largest navigation structure among the cascade hubs in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River, with a Class III scale, a lock chamber 200 meters long and 23 meters wide, and a sill depth of 4 meters. The total installed capacity of the power station is 180 megawatts, the runner diameter is 7.5 meters, and the unit weight reaches 1,350 tons.
"The project started construction in 2018 and has successively overcome multiple adverse effects such as treatment of unfavorable geological defects, temperature control and crack prevention of mass concrete, and prolonged autumn floods on the Han River. While ensuring quality and safety, the project progress was accelerated, achieving the basic completion of the project and the realization of comprehensive benefits," introduced Shao Yunqiang, Chief of the Construction Management Section of the Hubei Provincial Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub Project Construction Management Bureau (Preparatory).
Watching the Nianpanshan Hub Project being built step by step, Liu Xianfeng felt deeply proud. He came here in July 2019 to participate in the construction of the power station and has been here for more than five years. "When we arrived, excavation had just begun, and there was a lot of machinery and equipment. During foundation work, there were at most more than 300 people rushing the schedule in the powerhouse. Now the main structure is basically finished, and the decoration is also nearing completion."
Liu Xianfeng said that the most important part of the power station is the six generator units, so extra attention must be paid to civil construction, and installation requires even more refined operations.
Yuan Jianqing, head of the mechanical installation team, introduced that the bearing is the heart of the generator, and all components are relatively precise. In order to meet the design requirements, they use tools such as feeler gauges and inside micrometers for measurement, striving for not the slightest discrepancy.
When the Nianpanshan Water Conservancy and Hydropower Hub Project began construction, more than 200 people from Jiangtan Village, Yangzi Town, by the Han River were smoothly relocated. "I witnessed the completion of the project with my own eyes, and I have also moved into a new home. The environment has become more beautiful, the roads have been widened, and sanitation conditions have improved," said Jiang Haibo, a villager from Jiangtan Village, beaming as he spoke about his current life in the resettlement community.
