"Water has been released four or five times already this year, and the irrigation for our rice and rapeseed crops has been guaranteed. Thank you!" Standing beside the newly renovated West Main Canal of the Fuqiao River Irrigation District in Hubei Province, Luo Changman, a villager from Yujiagang Village, Zhongguanyi Town, Macheng City, looked at his fields and spoke excitedly.
The Fuqiao River Irrigation District is located on the north bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, spanning the two cities of Macheng in Huanggang and Xinzhou District in Wuhan. Situated at the junction of East China, North China, and the old revolutionary base area of the Dabie Mountains, in the transitional zone from the Dabie Mountain foothills to the Jianghan Plain, it is a large-scale irrigation district based on water storage projects and combining storage, diversion, and pumping.
However, the original project was built to low standards with an incomplete canal system. After more than 60 years of operation, the canals have collapsed and become severely silted, many canal structures have been damaged, and the irrigated area has shrunk significantly, no longer meeting the requirements of modern agricultural irrigation.
Wang Maoneng, deputy director of the Macheng Water Conservancy Development Center and legal representative of the Hubei Fuqiao River Irrigation District New Construction and Expansion Project, introduced that the feasibility study and preliminary design of the project were completed by Hubei Jinlang Survey and Design Co., Ltd. In 2023, the Provincial Development and Reform Commission approved preliminary design budget estimates of 1.142 billion yuan. The project mainly involves the new construction and lining of 86.5 kilometers of canals and the renovation and improvement of 1,259 canal structures.
The project officially commenced on April 28, 2024. To date, 51.3 kilometers of main and branch canals have been completed, 368 canal structures have been renovated and improved, and 346 million yuan has been disbursed.
Hong Weiyong, Party branch secretary of Yujiagang Village in Zhongguanyi Town, a beneficiary area of the project, acknowledged that as the project progresses, water intake has become more convenient, villagers' enthusiasm for grain production has increased, economic income has risen, and the water ecological environment and the living environment of surrounding villages have also improved.
While ensuring irrigation water supply, the construction project team has integrated refined management throughout the entire construction process and tapped deep into innovation potential.
Yang Hailong, chief engineer of Section 3 of the Fuqiao River Irrigation District New Construction and Expansion Project, introduced that their innovative one-time trapezoidal excavation forming tool has effectively simplified the construction process and improved construction efficiency. For every 100 meters of canal lining constructed, the schedule is advanced by one day; for the 13.5-kilometer canal, an estimated 135 days of construction time can be saved, laying a solid foundation for early delivery of the project.
It is understood that this project is a key national project for water security under the 14th Five-Year Plan. Upon completion, it will improve and restore 67,300 mu of irrigated area and improve irrigation on 252,300 mu, raise the irrigation coefficient from 0.45 to 0.58, and save 42.42 million cubic meters of water annually, providing water security for grain production within the irrigation district.
