On December 13, the "Lancang-Mekong Sweet Spring" project—the safe water supply demonstration project in Huile Village, Mengwei County, Luang Prabang Province, Laos—undertaken by PowerChina's Nam Ou River Basin Company and led by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, was officially declared complete and successfully handed over. The handover ceremony was held in Mengwei County, Laos, and was attended by more than 60 guests, including the county governor of Mengwei, the director of the Health Bureau, representatives of the Nam Ou River Basin Company, the village chief of Huile Village, and representatives of the villagers.
The Huile Village water supply system began construction on October 16 and was completed on December 5. During this period, a total of one bottom-screened intake at the water source point, one set of river-crossing facilities, one integrated rapid filtration and purification pool for the village, one set of ultraviolet disinfection facilities, five newly built and five rehabilitated water collection points in the village, and nearly 4,000 meters of water supply pipelines were completed. This project is the eighth village in Laos under the "Lancang-Mekong Sweet Spring" project to address the problems of unclean drinking water and water shortages.
Village Chief Kangde said with great pride that our village now has a clean and safe water source, and the villagers will no longer fall ill because of drinking water problems; the quality of life will be significantly improved, and this will become a solid foundation for the progress and prosperity of our village. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, the Nam Ou Company, the construction unit, and every expert and staff member involved in the project. It is precisely your hard work and professionalism that have made this dream a reality. From design to construction, from supervision to management, every stage embodies your sweat and wisdom.
County Governor Benmeng spoke on behalf of the Lao government, expressing gratitude for the assistance of the Chinese government and appreciation for the deep concern and strong support of the experts for Huile Village, which helped them overcome numerous difficulties in funding, technology, and resources and solved the long-standing problems of water shortage and unclean water quality in Huile Village. He called on all villagers to take active action to properly manage and maintain this water supply system and create a better living environment for future generations.
The successful implementation of this project has effectively guaranteed the drinking water safety of rural residents in the demonstration site, improved their health conditions, enhanced the well-being of women and children, and promoted local economic and social development. At the same time, this kind of cross-border mutual assistance and cooperation project has provided valuable experience for infrastructure construction at the provincial and village levels, set an example of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and added new luster to the friendship between China and Laos.
