On December 11, 2024, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Transport and Guangdong Communications Group announced that, less than half a year after the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, another super project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link—has officially opened for trial operation.
The Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link is the first cross-sea link project to break ground after the release of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and is another major cross-sea link in the Greater Bay Area following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. As Macao celebrates the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland, this "rainbow over the sea" shines in its unique posture along the banks of the Pearl River.
It is understood that the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link is a western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, starting in Pingsha Town, Zhuhai City, crossing the Huangmaohai waters westward, and ending in Doushan Town, Taishan City. With a total length of about 31 kilometers and a cross-sea section of about 14 kilometers, it features two main bridges—the Gaolan Port Bridge (a 700-meter main span, twin-tower single-span bridge) and the Huangmaohai Bridge (a 2×720-meter three-tower double-span cable-stayed bridge), currently the world's longest-span three-tower cable-stayed highway bridge—as well as two tunnels.
The Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link connects to the Hegang Expressway and Gaolan Port Expressway to the east, and to the Xintai Expressway and Western Coastal Expressway to the west. After opening, the drive from Zhuhai to Jiangmen will be shortened from more than one hour to about 30 minutes, effectively changing the current situation of relatively limited corridors between the coastal areas of western Guangdong and the core region of the Greater Bay Area, enabling the economic development of the Greater Bay Area to radiate toward western Guangdong and the coastal areas, and will stimulate and drive the integrated development of industry, science and technology, culture, and tourism on both the east and west banks of the Greater Bay Area, enhance the level of flow and allocation of resource factors, add another "key horizontal" to the interconnectivity of the Greater Bay Area, and create another shining名片 for the Greater Bay Area and even China's transport construction.
With the completion and opening of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link, Jiangmen, known as "China's Capital of Overseas Chinese," has ushered in a window and golden period of "bridge economy," and areas such as Jiangmen's Daguang Bay and Zhuhai's Jinwan District have also encountered major development opportunities, further advancing the integration of the Pearl River Estuary West Bank metropolitan area and empowering the high-quality development of the Greater Bay Area in the new stage. Jiangmen's Xinhui District's Bird Paradise National Wetland Park, Kaiping City's Chikan Ancient Town Overseas Chinese International Tourism Resort, Heshan City's OCT Gulao Water Town, Enping City's Quanlin Gold Town, Taishan City's Naqin Peninsula Geological Ocean Park, Shangchuan Island, Xiachuan Island, as well as the nourishing specialty yellow eel rice and fresh, plump seafood of all kinds... Traveling along the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link, one can view natural scenery, experience history and culture, and savor local customs.
The Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Link will also join the Pearl River Huangpu Bridge, Nansha Bridge, Humen Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and others to form the Greater Bay Area's cross-sea and cross-river corridor cluster, helping the Greater Bay Area form a world-class transport hub at an early date.
