In construction projects, difficult-to-handle waste earthwork can be processed and turned into environmentally friendly building materials or new subgrade materials. At the high-standard farmland site in Guodian Village, Yanguan Town, Haining City, flood discharge and irrigation ditches are scattered throughout, and the beautiful farmland scenery is fully visible. No one would have imagined that these brand-new ditch bricks were once waste earthwork from construction sites.
In the process of urban construction, large amounts of engineering spoil are generated, and its treatment and management face many challenges. According to incomplete statistics, the urban area of Haining generates 5 million cubic meters of engineering spoil each year. "In the past, this engineering spoil all had to be transported elsewhere for stockpiling. If handled improperly, it would not only affect the normal progress of construction, but also require the occupation of large stockpiling sites, causing adverse impacts on the ecological environment," said Shen Xiao, general manager of the Industrial Development Company under the Haining Communications and Control Group. To give engineering spoil a proper destination, three years ago the Haining Communications and Control Group began building an engineering spoil resource utilization project, constructing an 8,000-square-meter production workshop equipped with an intelligent lime-soil production line and a static-pressure brick-making production line to centrally process the engineering spoil generated by construction.
Recently, the reporter walked into the static-pressure brick-making workshop of the green new materials base for key transportation engineering construction in Haining City, where forklifts were repeatedly "feeding" sorted engineering spoil into a giant hopper. After being "digested" through a series of processes including crushing, mixing, and pressing, it was "transformed" into bricks made of recycled materials. "From engineering spoil to environmentally friendly building materials takes only 5 minutes," Shen Xiao introduced. These "reborn" bricks will be used for highway and municipal road sidewalk bricks, high-standard farmland roads, water conservancy ditches, and landscape engineering construction.
Similarly, engineering spoil here can also be turned into a new subgrade material—plant-mixed lime soil. "In the past, the slag materials mostly used for foundations in transportation and urban road construction were largely sourced from mining, which was not only expensive but also often faced problems such as unstable supply and substandard quality," Shen Xiao introduced. By comparison, plant-mixed lime soil used for road lime-soil subgrade construction has multiple advantages such as stable product quality, simple construction, high strength, and strong impermeability.
According to estimates, these two production lines can "consume" 700,000 cubic meters of engineering spoil each year, producing a variety of environmentally friendly products such as plant-mixed lime soil, solidified soil, antique-style small gray bricks, sponge-city sidewalk permeable bricks, and blocks for high-standard farmland ditches and road ditches.
"Our products are used in the Xingguang Operation Area of the Haining Port District of the Jiaxing Inland River Port and the G525 National Highway Haining Section Reconstruction Project, helping the project owner dispose of 120,000 cubic meters of spoil. At the same time, the project construction uses the lime soil we produce, which saves more than 20% of construction costs compared with using slag materials," Shen Xiao said. At present, the engineering spoil resource utilization project of the new materials industrial base has cumulatively consumed about 700,000 cubic meters of engineering spoil, and the cumulative sales output value of various products has exceeded 41 million yuan. The products produced by the project have been applied to the subgrades of multiple graded transportation roads and expressways, including the G525 National Highway Haining Section Reconstruction, Ziwei Expressway, and the Su-Tai Expressway, as well as to construction projects such as the Xingguang Operation Area of the Haining Port District of the Jiaxing Inland River Port.
