Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion ProjectIt is the first major project to commence construction under the follow-up works of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Today, the project's first super-large-diameter hard rock tunnel boring machine was launched in Baokang County, Hubei Province.
On the morning of December 2, at the construction site of the No. 8 maintenance and access tunnel of Section 4 of the Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project on the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, as the cutterhead slowly rotated,the first super-large-diameter hard rock tunnel boring machine of the Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project, the "Jianghan Pioneer," was successfully launched。
The "Jianghan Pioneer" is the first hard rock tunnel boring machine to roll off the line for the Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project on the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and is alsothe largest-diameter single-shield hard rock tunnel boring machine currently used in domestic water diversion tunnel projects，with an excavation diameter of 12.23 meters, a total length of approximately 160 meters, and a weight of about 2,800 tons.
Peng Chunlin, Director of the Second Construction Management Department of Jianghan Water Network Company under China South-to-North Water Diversion Group:The "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM (hard rock tunnel boring machine) is used in the No. 8 maintenance and access tunnel of the Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project, undertaking the tunneling task of a 13.61-kilometer water diversion tunnel. It is equipped with multiple innovative technologies, and its construction efficiency is 4 to 6 times higher than that of the drill-and-blast method.
The "Jianghan Pioneer," which has entered tunneling construction, will complete the tunneling task of the 13.61-kilometer water diversion tunnel within the next five-year construction period. As of now, the main tunnel of the Jianghan-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project has been excavated for more than 3.3 kilometers, and the total excavation of construction adits along the route has exceeded 14.9 kilometers. The entire project will deploy 10 hard rock tunnel boring machines; so far, 4 have completed factory acceptance, and the remaining 6 are scheduled to complete factory acceptance before the end of this year.
