In Block 1 of the Thar Coalfield in Sindh Province, Pakistan, as the first rays of morning sunlight pierce through the desert mist each day, a convoy of water trucks slowly rolls into the villages... This is the scene of the Pakistan Thar O&M Project Department of Hubei Engineering Company voluntarily providing about 50 tons of drinking water to local villages every day. Since 2022, Hubei Engineering Company has cumulatively provided over 35,000 tons of domestic water as voluntary aid to the local area.
The area is located deep in the desert and endures a high-temperature environment year-round, with fewer than 30 rainy days per year and average annual precipitation as low as under 100 millimeters, making it one of the most arid regions in the world. Faced with this drought-stricken, water-scarce environment, residents of the Thar region often travel long distances just to obtain the most basic domestic water. Upon learning of this situation, the Pakistan Thar O&M Project Department of Hubei Engineering Company took the initiative to contact the local government and villages and began arranging for water trucks to transport about 50 tons of drinking water to designated locations each day, voluntarily providing domestic water to the local area. To date, the voluntary water supply initiative has continued for more than two years, with a cumulative volume of approximately 35,000 tons delivered.
Every morning, the villagers of the Thar region are already waiting at the village entrance. Dressed simply, their faces beaming with anticipation and gratitude, the children run and cheer excitedly to welcome the arrival of the water trucks. Once the trucks come to a stop, the staff skillfully open the tank compartments and pour clear drinking water into buckets and containers, while the villagers line up in an orderly manner to collect it. From then on, the villagers no longer have to trek long distances in search of water sources; they can save several hours each day, greatly easing their physical burden and mental stress, and helping local children grow up in a safer and more hygienic environment. In addition, the villagers reuse the domestic water to grow vegetables and grain crops, selling the surplus produce at nearby markets, which has increased their income and improved their living conditions. The villagers say they are full of confidence in their future lives.
In Pakistan, the Nandipur O&M and Overhaul Project Department under Hubei Engineering Company carried out voluntary repairs for some schools in Punjab Province, directly benefiting more than one hundred children from impoverished families receiving basic education in the surrounding area. A series of charitable deeds by Hubei Engineering Company have greatly improved the quality of life of local villagers and won high praise from the local government and residents. A local government official said, "PowerChina Hubei Engineering Company has demonstrated through practical actions the profound friendship between the peoples of China and Pakistan, showing us the sense of responsibility and commitment of Chinese enterprises."
The Pakistan Thar Project undertaken by Hubei Engineering Company, as a landmark achievement of the 11th anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, has put into practice the CPEC spirit of "extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits" through concrete actions. During project construction and O&M, it has cumulatively created more than 18,000 direct job opportunities for the local area. Since the project was put into operation, its annual power generation has reached approximately 9 billion kWh, providing sustained, stable, clean and affordable electricity to more than 4 million Pakistani households, and making positive contributions to reducing Pakistan's energy costs, improving its energy mix and enhancing its energy security.
