On November 5, 2024, the final of the first "Construction Cup" debate competition of the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology was staged in A1-418. Four teachers, Xia Yongqiang, He Ying, Xu Haoming and Cui Zhipeng, were invited to attend the final, among whom Teacher Xia Yongqiang, Chen Hongbo, captain of the university debate team, and Zhang Enhao, vice-captain, served as judges.
At the final, the affirmative and negative sides engaged in a wonderful debate on whether the construction industry has "reached a dead end" or is "turning a corner." The debaters on both sides argued fiercely around the factual information conveyed by the motion, winning rounds of applause. When arguing that the construction industry has "reached a dead end," the affirmative side cited detailed data and pointed out the difficulties currently facing the industry, such as fierce market competition, increasingly strict environmental requirements and difficulties in corporate transformation, with rigorous logic; the negative side, advocating that the construction industry is "turning a corner," elaborated on opportunities from the perspectives of technological innovation and policy support, with clear organization.
After a fierce exchange, the three judges held that the negative side's outlook on the future of the construction industry was not specific enough, and the affirmative side was slightly superior overall. In the end, the Xinxin Xiangrong team representing the 2023 Urban and Rural Planning major won the championship, the Shuode Feichang Dui team representing the 2023 Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering major won second place, and the Happy Time team representing the 2024 Civil Engineering major won third place.
Zhang Enhao, vice-captain of the university debate team who served as a judge, said: "The civil engineering students intuitively demonstrated the current difficulties of the construction industry and the opportunities for the future; it was excellent." Zhou Hailong, second debater of the negative side, who won the titles of Best Debater of the Whole Competition and Most Popular Debater, believes: "Through this debate competition, as a student of the School of Civil Engineering, I have gained a deeper understanding of this motion. It is undeniable that the construction industry is facing enormous difficulties, but we should view its development prospects dialectically, explore the reasons why it has 'reached a dead end' and seek solutions, actively pursue transformation and upgrading, and push the industry toward 'turning a corner.'"
From October 19 to November 5, this "Construction Cup" debate competition went through three stages: the preliminary round, the semifinals and the final, mobilizing first- and second-year students of the whole school to participate widely, with a total of 14 teams formed. In the preliminary round, the 14 teams were divided into 7 groups and held fierce debates on motions such as "Escaping the big city" vs. "Escaping back to the big city" is a better way out for contemporary young people, and "Information fragmentation improves/lowers the cognitive level of contemporary people." In the semifinals, the 6 qualifying teams held in-depth discussions on motions closely related to contemporary young people, such as "To achieve reduction and resource recovery of household waste, we should mainly rely on government regulation/public self-discipline" and "The world is/is not a huge makeshift team."
This "Construction Cup" debate competition not only improved the logical thinking ability of the participating students, enhanced their knowledge reserves and broadened their horizons, but also exercised everyone's expressive ability and improved their psychological quality. More importantly, by discussing motions in different directions, this debate competition also aroused students' attention to real social issues and strengthened their sense of social responsibility.
