Recently, the Taoyuan County Natural Resources Bureau organized staff to go to Xi'an Town to inspect on site the treatment progress of the collapse geological hazard hidden danger point in Hongyanwan Group, Xi'an Village. The project started construction in April this year. To date, more than 20,000 cubic meters of earth and rock have been excavated and removed through slope cutting, 200 meters of scaffolding and 120 meters of drainage ditches have been installed, the originally protruding dangerous rock mass in the project area has been manually removed, the geological hazard risk has been preliminarily eliminated, and the lighting behind local residents' houses and their daily production and living conditions have also been greatly improved.

In January this year, during a geological hazard inspection, the county Natural Resources Bureau found that local instability and damage had already appeared at the collapse geological hazard hidden danger point in Hongyanwan Group, and that the risk of collapse deformation still existed. Once out of control, it would endanger the safety of life and property of a gas station at the front edge of the slope and a total of more than 190 people in 16 houses, with unimaginable consequences. The situation was urgent, and relevant departments immediately launched emergency engineering treatment.
According to on-site surveys by the technical department, based on the slope direction, current conditions, rock stratum attitude and historical stability of the hidden danger point, it was divided into sections A and B for separate treatment. For the dangerous rock zone in section A, the method of "intercepting and drainage ditch engineering + monitoring engineering" was adopted for prevention and control; for the dangerous rock zone in section B, the method of "toe protection wall + anchor bolt lattice beam + intercepting and drainage ditch + monitoring engineering" was adopted for prevention and control. At the same time, revegetation was carried out on the treated slope to conserve soil and water. At present, the first phase of the project treatment has been completed, and the second phase is under intensive preparation.

"Things are much better after the project. Previously, rocks and branches from the mountain could come into the house through the windows. Now a ditch has been cleared behind, and our lives and lighting are both better," said the female owner of a street-front shop.
This is not the only effort made by the local area to address geological hazard hidden dangers. Because Taoyuan County is located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yuan River basin and at the tail ends of the Xuefeng and Wuling mountain ranges, areas highly prone to geological hazards are widely distributed, causing relatively frequent geological hazards in the local area, involving 18 townships and a total of 93 geological hazard hidden danger points.
In order to effectively carry out geological hazard prevention and control work, in recent years Taoyuan County has invested a total of more than 30 million yuan in hidden danger treatment. It has cumulatively carried out engineering treatment on 8 key geological hazard hidden danger points, including Shaping Village in Shaping Town, Xi'an Town Middle School, and Lengjiaxi Village in Yangxiqiao, and has implemented relocation and avoidance for 247 households across the county, safeguarding the safety of life and property of tens of thousands of people.

The country is people-oriented, just as a tree depends on the soil. In 2024, Taoyuan County was selected as a county-level pilot for the "hidden danger points + risk areas dual-control system construction" of geological hazards. "On the one hand, we will focus on prevention, make full use of scientific and technological means, strengthen duty and on-call work, carry out door-knocking actions, and organize relocation for hazard avoidance in an orderly manner; on the other hand, we will focus on treatment, accelerate the engineering rectification of geological hazard hidden danger points in a targeted manner, promote the shift of the focus of geological hazard prevention and control from 'hidden danger points' to 'hidden danger points + risk areas,' and use practical actions to build a strong defense line for safeguarding the lives and property of the people," said Zeng Yongjun, director of the county Natural Resources Bureau.
