China's greatness lies in the depth of its cultural heritage and in the strength of its construction.
From the giant dragon spanning the sea—the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge—to the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, a super project connecting the east and west banks of the Pearl River Estuary; from the Three Gorges Project and the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to the China-Laos Railway and Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, all have set new records and made history. China has thus been dubbed the "infrastructure maniac"; in the eyes of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, this is because the large scale, great difficulty, and high speed of China's civil engineering industry have left a very deep impression on the world. China's infrastructure construction has gone from initially following others to now leading, which is not only a leap in construction technology but also the support of strong national strength.
Today, civil engineering construction has become a calling card for China. In the global civil engineering field, China is writing a new chapter of high-quality development in the new era with its unique innovation and strong execution. How were China's major national projects built? What cutting-edge technologies did they use? In the wave of developing new quality productive forces in China, how do they demonstrate the country's comprehensive strength and its significance as a global benchmark?
A high-quality forum gathering engineering technology experts and industry leaders sparked heated discussion. On November 9, the Engineering Technology Upgrade and Application Innovation Summit and the 7th Harbin Institute of Technology Guangdong Grand Civil Engineering Academic Forum were successfully held at the Guangzhou Star River Peninsula. Led by academicians, more than 200 experts and scholars held in-depth dialogue around the theme "Resilience and Innovation: Building the Foundation of China's New Quality Competitiveness," exchanging insights and providing world-leading Chinese solutions for cross-sea engineering construction.
In the keynote report session of the summit, Song Shenyou, director and chief engineer of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link Management Center and one of the first recipients of the State Council's "National Outstanding Engineer" title, noted that the historic opening of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link in June this year attracted global attention, allowing the world to "bridge" witness to the birth of a maritime miracle.
As a major national project that has attracted worldwide attention, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is currently a cross-sea cluster project of extremely high comprehensive construction difficulty, setting ten "world's bests," including the world's largest span fully offshore sea steel box girder suspension bridge, the world's highest navigable clearance sea bridge, and the world's longest two-way eight-lane undersea immersed tube tunnel.
Song Shenyou reflected that after overcoming three particularly complex challenges—complex construction conditions, high technical difficulty, and high operational safety risks—the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, which took seven years to make its stunning debut, has provided the Shenzhen-Zhongshan paradigm, Guangdong experience, and Chinese solutions for cross-sea engineering construction worldwide.
Letting cutting-edge maritime civil engineering technologies shine on the world stage
In addition to the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, the "floating offshore cities" topic at this forum also attracted considerable attention. Ou Jinping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, believes that the civil engineering discipline still has great development prospects in the future, among which maritime civil engineering—with offshore corridors, spatial expansion, and land-sea coordination as development frontiers—carries people's expectations for a better life in the future.
Ou Jinping introduced that as early as 2016, he established a marine civil engineering team at Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen). Today, the team is exploring and testing engineering challenges such as large offshore load-bearing floating body modules, how to fix floating bodies to the seabed, and how seawater-sea sand concrete can resist corrosion.
It can be foreseen that the construction of floating offshore cities will gradually be put into practice in the future, and more maritime miracles will shine in China's innovation in marine engineering technology, further extending China's global leadership in engineering technology.
Empowering future urban sustainable development with "new quality productive forces"
New quality productive forces are the key to keeping engineering technology ever-renewing, and they were also a "high-frequency term" heatedly discussed by experts at this forum.
Ma Jun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, stated that identifying problems and then solving them is the basic logic for forming new quality productive forces. Based on the development of new quality productive forces, we can promote engineering technology innovation and upgrading from new angles, new dimensions, and new models.
Ma Jun believes that as cities evolve from large cities to megacities to super-large cities, upgrading urban environments, spatial resources, and energy structures toward green, low-carbon, and sustainable transformation is the key to high-quality urban development in the future. In the future development and construction of green, low-carbon cities, by fully utilizing new development momentum and opportunities in the new era, civil engineering technology will usher in greater room for growth.
Enhancing high-quality residential construction with advanced engineering innovation technologies
Real estate is an important industry related to the national economy, people's livelihood, and economic development, and it is also a major arena for engineering technology innovation and practice.
Chen Yiming, president of the China Real Estate Association and former chief engineer of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, stated that with the deep adjustment of the real estate industry, the market supply-demand relationship has undergone major changes, the general public is paying more attention to improving housing quality, and product quality will clearly be the core element of future industry competition.
As the saying goes, a high-quality life is inseparable from high-quality housing. Chen Yiming firmly believes that for the real estate industry to pursue high-quality development, it must anchor on two aspects—housing quality and housing function—adhere to the high-quality route, uphold the spirit of seeking refinement and innovation, and use advanced engineering technology to enhance the level of high-quality residential construction.
Building a beautiful China with high-quality development and the world's highest standards
What kind of residential works best represent world-class high-quality housing? In the view of Huang Wenzi, founder and chairman of Star River Group, honorary director and visiting professor of Harbin Institute of Technology, only residential products that incorporate the cultural connotations of their own country in design, adopt more new technologies, new crafts, and intelligent features, and are built with high-standard construction requirements can achieve the industry vision of high-quality development.
Architecture is a systematic project requiring coordination across the entire industrial chain, including planning and design, civil engineering, landscape construction, and interior decoration. In every link, engineering technology innovation and the pursuit of quality must complement each other, so that industrial goals such as "new quality productive forces," "high-quality development," and "green and low-carbon" can be rooted in project development, Huang Wenzi emphasized. Urban construction must also follow high-quality underlying logic and natural laws, thereby forming core competitiveness that does not fade with time.
