From November 7 to 9, the Chinese Academy of Engineering Academic Symposium on Engineering Science and Technology — Urban and Major Infrastructure Resilience Symposium (the Second Urban and Major Infrastructure Resilience Symposium & the Seventh International Forum on Urban Flood Control and Drainage) was held in Shanghai.

The conference was co-hosted by the Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering Division of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tongji University, and Harbin Institute of Technology.

More than 40 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, foreign academicians, and renowned industry experts from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Canada, Japan and other countries gathered together.
Lu Xilin, Chairman of the Conference, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Professor at Tongji University, stated that against the backdrop of rapid economic and social development, improving the resilience of urban infrastructure and the capacity for water disaster prevention has become an urgent priority. By building a scientific resilience cognition system and developing a full-life-cycle resilience theory, methodology, and technical system, it is possible to effectively respond to natural or man-made disasters such as earthquakes and urban waterlogging, thereby safeguarding the safe operation and sustainable development of cities.
The conference included plenary reports, thematic seminars, and sub-forums, among other content. Twenty-one academicians delivered plenary reports, which focused on enhancing the resilience of cities and major infrastructure and on systematic defense against urban water disasters, proposing strategic, forward-looking, and interdisciplinary innovative ideas, and distilling theoretical, technical, management, and standards systems.
The Seventh International Forum on Urban Flood Control and Drainage also set up two sub-forums, focusing on in-depth discussions of systematic prevention and control of urban water disasters and intelligent management and control of urban water systems, respectively. Concurrently with the conference, the Tongji University Civil Engineering Discipline Development Forum and the 110th Anniversary Celebration of the Discipline's Founding were also held.
In the thematic seminar session, the Seventh International Forum on Urban Flood Control and Drainage focused on the theme of "Enhancing the Resilience of Urban Water Systems and Integrated Management and Control," proposing new concepts, new ideas, and new paradigms for the systematic prevention and control of urban water disasters and the enhancement of urban water system resilience, as well as systematic solutions for urban water disasters to effectively respond to climate change, providing methodological and pathway support for continuously improving the water disaster defense engineering system and promoting the innovative development of China's urban safety engineering science and technology.
The Second Urban and Major Infrastructure Resilience Symposium focused on the major engineering science and technology issue of urban and major infrastructure resilience, explored pathways for building urban and major infrastructure resilience based on systems science, proposed a new paradigm for full-life-cycle resilience development for normal and abnormal disaster prevention of cities and major infrastructure, explored models and methods for applying modern information technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence to enhance the resilience of cities and major infrastructure, and continuously promoted the development and innovation of China's urban and major infrastructure resilience system.
At the closing ceremony, academicians and experts unveiled the plaque for the Urban Blood Vessel Digital Twin Branch of the Dam Road Engineering Hospital. During the conference, the "Multi-Hazard Prevention and Control Engineering Hall" of the National Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Disaster Prevention and Mitigation also held its opening ceremony, which many experts attended.
The purpose of holding this conference was to promote academic exchange and cooperation in the field of urban and infrastructure resilience, and to provide an important platform for the development and innovation of engineering science and technology in urban safety and urban construction planning and management. In the future, the conference will continue to participate in research and practice in the fields of urban and infrastructure resilience and flood control and drainage, continuously strengthen cooperation and exchange with relevant institutions and experts at home and abroad, and contribute to building safe, livable, and resilient cities.
