Recently, large-scale underground space construction has begun in the Zhangyuan East Zone.
What makes the Zhangyuan East Zone even more distinctive is its development of underground space. Metro Lines 12, 2, and 13 respectively occupy Maoming Road, Nanjing Road, and Shimen Road, and currently cannot achieve cross-line transfers. Through the development of the underground space in the Zhangyuan East Zone, this problem can be readily solved. Shi Yunlun introduced that the underground space has three levels totaling about 80,000 square meters, mainly serving rail transit transfer and parking functions, and can provide more than 500 underground parking spaces. The first and second underground levels are for commercial and public service facilities, injecting new vitality into the entire district.

Shi Yunlun, Chairman of Shanghai Jing'an Real Estate (Group) Co., Ltd., stated today that, given the overall scale of Zhangyuan, only one-third of the area is currently in operation. It is expected that by the end of 2026 at the earliest, the entire Zhangyuan East Zone will also be put into operation. "The above-ground buildings in the Zhangyuan East Zone still retain nearly 30,000 square meters of historic buildings, as well as some new buildings, including an art museum, a performing arts center, a hotel, and more."
Zhangyuan's protective renovation has become a "model" for urban renewal, which is inseparable from technical safeguards and breakthroughs. To meet the development needs of underground space beneath heritage-protected buildings, project engineers surveyed every corner of the Zhangyuan project site and created 3D tailored designs for all buildings. Zhang Yi, General Manager of Shanghai Construction Group Second Construction Group Urban Renewal Construction Co., Ltd., said that based on the limited operable height for indoor construction, door opening widths, and designed pile position dimensions, engineers developed small "construction robots" customized specifically for the Zhangyuan project, such as a self-propelled low-headroom bored pile drilling rig only 3.03 meters tall, which, on the basis of ensuring the building structure is not damaged, drives piles that originally could not be installed into the ground "within a tiny space." In the future, a large number of "construction robots" will also participate in the urban renewal construction of Zhangyuan, achieving intelligent and automated construction.
Located at the core of the Nanjing West Road Historic Preservation Area in Jing'an District, Zhangyuan has a history of more than 140 years. It is one of the largest, best-preserved, and most architecturally diverse shikumen building complexes surviving in Shanghai, and also Shanghai's first urban renewal project involving protective expropriation and renovation. After four years of protective renovation, the Zhangyuan West Zone opened to the public on December 1, 2022. This shikumen lilong neighborhood, marked by the titles "No. 1 Garden of Shanghai" and "Seventy-Two Tenants," has added a new footnote to urban renewal and injected new meaning into urban life with even greater prosperity and vitality than before. Once the Zhangyuan East Zone is completed, the truly renewed Zhangyuan will be revealed through the linkage of the east and west zones.
