Due to the complex conditions of the Snowy 2.0 project, the project team is preparing to add a new tunnel boring machine (TBM) to excavate the tunnel section through the complex fault zone along the 17-kilometer tunnel route connecting the upper reservoir and the underground power station. Snowy Hydro CEO Dennis Barnes stated: "Bringing in a fourth machine is the best way to ensure Snowy 2.0 can be completed on schedule (December 2028)." The Snowy 2.0 project modification documents have been submitted to the New South Wales Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. If planning approval is granted, the new equipment will be put into use by the end of 2025.

The Snowy 2.0 project is Australia's largest renewable energy project. It will connect two reservoirs through 27 km of tunnels and a power station with pumping capability, enabling water to be released for power generation during peak electricity demand and pumped back to the upper storage when there is surplus energy in the system, ready to generate power again.
