On August 12, 2024, the exploratory tunnel for the Coire Glas project was officially completed. The Coire Glas project is the first large-scale pumped storage hydropower project in the UK in 40 years. To ensure the construction safety of the underground power station complex, the project team built a tunnel approximately 5 meters high and 4.5 meters wide around the proposed location of the underground power station complex. This tunnel will enable the project team to collect accurate information on geological conditions and provide a reference for the design of the main works.

After the tunnel is completed, survey drilling and testing will continue to further investigate the area of the proposed underground power station. The completion of this exploratory tunnel gives the relevant parties hope that a final decision on the project can be made at the end of 2025 or in early 2026, with construction of the main structures to begin in the second half of 2026.
