Recently, the tunnel of the Civil Works Section 1 of the Yichang Section of the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway, invested in and constructed by Hubei Communications Investment Group and undertaken by China Railway 18th Bureau Group, has achieved a cumulative excavation of 2,033 meters, surpassing the 2,000-meter mark and marking phased progress in tunnel construction.

The Civil Works Section 1 of the Yichang Section of the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway is entirely located within Hekou Township, Yuan'an County, with a total length of 10.604 kilometers, of which the tunnel is 8.751 kilometers long, accounting for as much as 82.5%. During excavation, challenges such as weak interlayers and gas emission were encountered, with risks of collapse and explosion, making construction considerably difficult.

Based on the actual conditions of the tunnel, the construction team scientifically prepared a special tunnel construction plan, used advanced geological forecasting and real-time gas monitoring to assess construction risks, introduced intelligent and advanced equipment such as rock drilling jumbos, wet concrete spraying manipulators, and secondary lining trolleys, and equipped eight major safety production systems for real-time monitoring, laying a solid foundation for safe, rapid, and high-quality tunnel excavation.

The Yichang Section of the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway is an important component of the planned Pingdingshan-Yichang Expressway. The project starts near Dazengjiawan Village, Hekou Township, Yuan'an County, Yichang City, connects to the Xiangyang Section of the Pingyi Expressway, runs south through Hekou Township, Maopingchang Town, Mingfeng Town, and Hualinsi Town, and intersects with the G59 Hubei Expressway at Yuquan Subdistrict, Dangyang City.

Upon completion, the travel time on the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway will be reduced from the current 3 hours to 1.5 hours. It is of great significance for achieving direct expressway connection between Yichang and Xiangyang, two provincial sub-center cities, promoting the linkage between the Han River and the Yangtze River and the connection between the Central Plains and the Three Gorges, advancing the coordinated development of the Yijingjing and Xiangyang metropolitan areas, and supporting Hubei's efforts to accelerate its development as a pioneer area in building a new development pattern nationwide.
