On August 19, 2024, the first of the two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) used for the Melbourne North East Link tunnel project was ready to begin excavation. The project uses a 15.6 m extra-large-diameter TBM, which is said to be one of the largest TBMs in the Southern Hemisphere.
The TBM will bore a 6.5 km long tunnel, with a planned advance of about 10 m per day. Construction will continue until 2026, and the tunnel will open to traffic in 2028.
