On July 29, 2024, the UK's new Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, announced in the House of Commons the decision to cancel the Stonehenge tunnel project, claiming that the move was intended to address the fiscal "black hole" caused by £22 billion in overspending by the previous government.

The Stonehenge tunnel plan was proposed by the UK Department for Transport in 2014. However, because the tunnel would pass through the Stonehenge heritage area, the plan naturally encountered strong opposition from various sectors, thus beginning a decade-long controversy over the Stonehenge tunnel. Last July, the government of former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak issued a development consent order approving the plan.
