According to the Pudong New Area Information Office, the main construction of the flight area for the Phase IV expansion of Pudong Airport has recently commenced.

The Phase IV Expansion Project of Pudong Airport (referred to as the "Phase IV Project") is a key project in the construction of Shanghai International Aviation Hub. It is a major project aimed at accelerating interconnection within the Yangtze River Delta region, better serving passengers' high-quality travel, and meeting the medium- and long-term development needs of base airlines and hub operations. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate an annual passenger throughput of 130 million person-times at Pudong Airport. The flight area project of the Phase IV expansion of Pudong Airport, as an important component of the "2+6" project cluster of the Phase IV Project, aims to ensure the timely completion and operation of Terminal T3, and to simultaneously build aprons, taxiways, and other ancillary facilities. The project is large in scale, with numerous and widely distributed project sites and overlapping interfaces, making coordinated construction management highly difficult. The project milestones are closely interlinked. During construction, it faces prominent safety risks and difficulties such as large-area non-stop construction within restricted areas, deep foundation pit excavation, and protection of important pipelines. According to the overall schedule and mutual constraints, the project is implemented in two batches and phases, with the main body expected to be completed by December 2027.

After the flight area project is completed and put into operation, it will further enhance the infrastructure support capacity of Shanghai airports, better meet the rapid growth of air passenger and cargo traffic and the operational needs of airlines, and better help Shanghai airports build a world-class international aviation hub with leading quality.
