The main tunnel of the Yangtze-to-Hanjiang Water Diversion Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route, a major national water conservancy project, has now been excavated 2,120 meters, while 17 branch tunnels have cumulatively been excavated over 9,000 meters. The project's water conveyance route has a total length of 194.7 kilometers, using tunnels for water conveyance throughout. Once completed, the project will connect the Three Gorges Reservoir and the Danjiangkou Reservoir, making the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route more abundant.

The main dam of the Hainan Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project has been topped out along its entire line and will begin impoundment in August

On July 16, the Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project on the Nandu River in Hainan Province was accelerating construction. The project is one of the 150 major water conservancy projects prioritized by the state during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Located at the junction of Chengmai and Tunchang counties in Hainan, it is a large-scale water resource allocation project planned for northern Hainan and a controlling water source project safeguarding water supply and ecological water security for Haikou City, Chengmai County, Ding'an County, Tunchang County, and Lingao County in the lower reaches of the Nandu River, with a total investment of 7.364 billion yuan.

It is understood that the main dam of the project has been topped out along its entire line. Installation of the radial gates for the overflow dam section is currently underway, and impoundment is scheduled to be achieved in August 2024. The project's benefits are mainly water supply and flood control, with due consideration given to irrigation and power generation.

The Qiongxibei Water Supply Project is progressing smoothly

On July 16, at the construction site in Danzhou, the Qiongxibei Water Supply Project was progressing smoothly and was at the peak of construction.

The Qiongxibei Water Supply Project is mainly located within Danzhou City, with part involving the Baisha Li Autonomous County. As a key national water network backbone project prioritized for construction under the 14th Five-Year Plan and one of the 150 major water conservancy projects designated by the State Council, the project officially began construction in July 2021, with a construction period of 54 months and a planned completion by the end of December 2025, with a total investment of 4.356 billion yuan. The main task of the Qiongxibei Water Supply Project is to extend the Songtao West Irrigation District, build a water resource allocation system for northwestern Hainan, and resolve issues of agricultural irrigation and comprehensive urban-rural water use. It is designed with an irrigation area of 720,000 mu and an annual total water supply of 442 million cubic meters, which will safeguard domestic and urban-rural industrial water security for 630,000 people in Danzhou City and Baisha County.

It is reported that the smooth implementation of the project is of great significance for resolving the difficulties of agricultural irrigation and urban-rural livelihood water use in northwestern Hainan, promoting the development of tropical characteristic high-efficiency agriculture, and safeguarding the water demand for economic and social development in the New Yingwan area. It is an important battleground for shoring up the shortcomings of water resource allocation in northwestern Hainan and winning the battle of Hainan's "Six Waters Co-governance."

The design functions of Phase I of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project have basically been realized

On July 7, Unit 3 of the Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub Power Station completed a 72-hour trial operation. The power station was connected to the grid at full capacity and operated smoothly, and the design functions of Phase I of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project, including water supply, ecology, and power generation, have basically been realized.

As the "leading project" of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project, the main task of the Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub is to regulate and store inflow from the main stream of the Hanjiang River, supply water to the Guanzhong region, and also generate power. "The project uses high-lift, large-flow pumping stations to raise Hanjiang River water by 106.45 meters before sending it into the Qinling water conveyance tunnel," introduced Zheng Hongxi, deputy manager of the Huangjinxia Branch of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Company. The Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub Power Station has installed three Kaplan turbine-generator units with a single-unit capacity of 45,000 kilowatts, a total installed capacity of 135,000 kilowatts, and a multi-year average power generation of 351 million kilowatt-hours. Since the beginning of this year, the three units of the Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub Power Station have successively started installation and commissioning. Full-capacity grid connection of the three units will further leverage the comprehensive economic benefits of the water conservancy hub.

Not only power generation: since water supply to Xi'an began on July 16, 2023, the water supply, ecological, and other effects of Phase I of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project have begun to emerge.

Since the start of summer this year, the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project has played a "ballast stone" role, increasing water supply to Xi'an from 1 cubic meter per second to 12.9 cubic meters per second, with daily water supply exceeding 1.1 million cubic meters, accounting for nearly half of Xi'an's total water consumption.

In addition, the Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub has built a 1,908-meter ecological fishway. During this year's migration season, under the "escort" of grilles and artificial fish nests, fish passed through the project's "custom-built" ecological fishway and successfully "climbed" over the 63-meter-high dam to return upstream to reproduce and spawn.

At present, the continued construction project of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion is running at full speed. In the heart of the Qinling Mountains, construction of the Huangjinxia Water Conservancy Hub pumping station is accelerating, installation of pump units is more than halfway complete, and Unit 1 will be completed in August. Zhang Pengli, general manager of the Huangjinxia Branch, said: "The pumping station is expected to be completed within the year. Once put into use, it will be able to lift Hanjiang River water to the Sanhekou Reservoir, achieving the effect of water resource peak shaving and energy storage while safeguarding water supply."

North of the Qinling Mountains, the Phase II water conveyance and distribution project of the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion is accelerating construction. In 2026, the flowing clear water from the Hanjiang River is expected to fully nourish the Guanzhong land.
