On July 4, 2024, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration awarded Veidekke a design and construction cooperation contract worth a total of 2.1 billion Norwegian kroner for the Hammersborg Tunnel and the Vaterland Tunnel.

Both tunnels were built in 1989 and currently require extensive maintenance, including repair of the concrete structures and roadways. General infrastructure such as lighting, cables, pipes, wiring, and signage in both tunnels will also be replaced. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.
