"Foundation Expert" is a series of public welfare activities hosted by the "Foundation Academy" of the China Foundation Technology Innovation Intellectual Property Alliance, aiming to discover and disseminate innovative technologies and individual expertise in the field of foundation engineering. The first live broadcast, in collaboration with Zhu Chunming, a researcher at the China Academy of Building Research and chief engineer of the Underground Space Research Institute of Jianyan Foundation Engineering Co., Ltd., provided an in-depth explanation of "Analysis of Causes of Anti-Uplift Accidents in Underground Engineering." During the live broadcast, Engineer Zhu focused on three key points:

I. Problems existing in basement anti-uplift:
1. Heaving deformation and component cracking of underground garages
2. Rising groundwater levels causing concrete reservoirs to float upward
3. Local uplift of the basement causing tilting of the upper offset structure
4. Local uplift of the structure causing crushing failure at column ends
II. Cause analysis
1. Incorrect determination of the anti-uplift design water level;
2. Significant changes in water level;
3. Insufficient structural anti-uplift safety margin;
4. Failure to backfill covering soil in a timely manner;
5. Inappropriate stoppage of dewatering operations during construction;
6. Infiltration of rainwater accumulation significantly raising the groundwater level;
7. Failure to consider the adverse effects of adjacent water bodies on the anti-uplift design water level;
8. The waterproof base slab failing to meet requirements for bending resistance, crack resistance, or inverted arch resistance.
III. Structural anti-uplift measures and detailing recommendations
1. Adding strategic dead load
1) Increasing the weight of covering soil on the basement roof
2) Increasing the dead load of the structure (including the base slab)
3) Installing a heavy concrete composite layer on the base slab
4) Installing fire water tanks, concrete partition walls, etc. on the base slab (barite, steel slag concrete 24/25—>38)
2. Reducing the embedment depth of the base slab
1) Reducing the number of underground structure levels or story height
2) Converting the negative first floor into a semi-underground structure
3) Appropriately raising the ±0.000 elevation
In the field of underground engineering, anti-uplift design is both a technical exploration and a challenge to economic rationality. How to find a balance between the two has become a major difficulty in engineering design, requiring us to solve it with comprehensive and innovative thinking. By creatively using finite element software for overall structural analysis of anti-uplift, we can better evaluate the effectiveness and economy of design schemes and provide more reliable support for engineering practice. In anti-uplift design, it is crucial to fully value the influence of the stiffness of anti-uplift components on the overall structure. Through meticulous structural design and optimization, we can effectively enhance the anti-uplift performance of the project and ensure safety and reliability during construction. At the same time, promoting intelligent anti-uplift technology (combined active and passive anti-uplift) and developing innovative anti-uplift components will provide broader space for the anti-uplift capacity of underground engineering, bringing more possibilities and solutions.
On the other hand, developing new backfill materials is one of the keys to solving construction difficulties. By introducing new material technologies and process innovations, we can break through traditional construction limitations, improve construction efficiency and quality, and achieve sustainable development and improvement of underground engineering. In future development, we need to continuously explore and innovate, combining modern technology and engineering practice, continuously improving the level of anti-uplift design, and providing better guarantees for the reliability and economy of underground engineering. At the same time, emphasizing monitoring and management during construction is also key to ensuring the effectiveness of anti-uplift design. Timely discovery of problems and adoption of effective measures can reduce engineering risks and ensure the stability and safety of underground structures. Through comprehensive monitoring technologies and management methods, we can comprehensively improve project quality and benefits and achieve the best results in anti-uplift design.
In summary, anti-uplift design is an important topic in the field of underground engineering, requiring both technological innovation and full consideration of economic rationality. By comprehensively applying innovative technologies and management concepts, we can find a balance, achieve good anti-uplift design results, and contribute to the sustainable development and progress of underground engineering.
