On July 6, the Jingpeng Tunnel, the last tunnel on the entire Jining-Tongliao Railway electrification renovation project, was successfully holed through, marking the completion of all seven tunnels on the Jitong Railway electrification renovation project.
The Jingpeng Tunnel is located in Jingpeng Town, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, with a total length of 1,450 meters, of which 935 meters lie in aeolian sand sections. It is a high-risk tunnel with extremely great construction difficulty and is the only aeolian sand tunnel on the entire line. The builders actively overcame the adverse geological effects of fine silty sand, shallow cover, and weak interlayers, and implemented measures such as strengthened geological monitoring, strict control of explosive use, and the deployment of intelligent lining trolleys, ensuring the safe and smooth holing-through of the tunnel.
According to reports, tunnel construction in aeolian sand sections carries the risk of sand collapse and leakage, and even internal cave-ins. During construction, techniques such as surface jet grouting piles and advanced horizontal jet grouting piles for reinforcement, as well as the three-bench temporary invert method, were adopted for scientific construction, overcoming the technical challenges of excavation in aeolian sand sections.
The Jitong Railway runs across central and eastern Inner Mongolia and is a major corridor for the eastward transport of Mongolian coal, as well as an important railway trunk line connecting energy and material supplies among Northeast, North, and Northwest China. Electrification renovation began in April 2020, covering a total of 923 kilometers. Upon completion, passenger and freight transport capacity will be greatly enhanced: annual freight volume will increase from more than 36 million tons to over 80 million tons, passenger train speed will rise from 65 km/h to a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h, and the end-to-end travel time will be shortened by about 6 hours.
