On June 19, 2024, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) held a groundbreaking ceremony at the future Santa Clara Station and Newhall Station, marking the official launch of the BART transit extension project. The BART transit extension project was originally scheduled to begin construction in 2019, but was delayed until now due to design and funding issues; it is reported that the BART transit extension project currently has a total budget of nearly US$9.3 billion.

The BART transit extension project will use a 16.5 m extra-large-diameter shield machine, which will be manufactured, assembled, and tested by Herrenknecht at its plant in Schwanau, Germany. The construction and transport of the shield machine are expected to take 18 months, and after being transported to the Newhall shipyard in California, USA, it will take another 6 months for on-site reassembly.
