Several vintage dining tables, a mottled wooden door, strings of neon lights... Inside an old house in Hupi Village, Tacheng Township, Nanchang County, Jiangxi Province, Peng Bailing and several other "new villagers" sit on bamboo chairs, sipping coffee, admiring the flowers and plants, chatting about local customs, and easing into a slower pace of life.
In the past, the villagers of Hupi Village relocated, leaving behind many old houses that had fallen into disrepair. Starting in May last year, a group of "new villagers" from various places moved into the village, weaving all kinds of creative ideas into the renovation of the old houses.
Peng Bailing, who loves rural life, quit her job and returned to Hupi Village to renovate her grandfather's old house. "If we don't renovate it now, the memories will truly be gone," Peng Bailing said. The old house retains its original structure, old objects have been turned into artistic ornaments, and the bedroom keeps the ancestral large wooden bed. The old residence, blending rustic and modern styles, has moved from Peng Bailing's imagination into reality.
By chance, Peng Bailing shared her life in the renovated old house online. "I never expected it to attract a group of like-minded friends," Peng Bailing said with a smile.
Chen Song, who works in art and design, is a good friend of Peng Bailing. After helping Peng Bailing renovate the old house, he was moved by her idea of preserving old memories and decided to stay on as a "new villager." "Old houses need to be preserved, and old times need to be remembered," Chen Song said. He renovated an old house, created a vegetable garden, and planted a field of flowers.
With "new villagers" in the village came new changes.
Last year, after Hupi Village underwent improvement and upgrading, Nanchang County launched a pilot rural operation program for the village, revitalizing vacant and dilapidated houses and publicly releasing a "New Villager Recruitment Plan" to attract more "new villagers" to move in.
The small courtyard adjacent to Yihai Kerry's thousand-mu rapeseed fields is an old house rented by "new villager" Qin Chong. She is a post-2000 woman from Guangxi who works with her boyfriend in the new media industry. Last July, she saw Hupi Village's "New Villager Recruitment Plan" online and came here. "I've been to Fujian, Yunnan, and many other places, but here I feel there is great potential," Qin Chong said. She hopes to realize her own value while also creating value for Hupi Village.
Hupi Village enables "new villagers" to find an idyllic life. What kind of "new picture" do these "new villagers" bring to Hupi Village in return?
Last August, Peng Bailing and Chen Song collaborated to establish Baidao Cultural Tourism Development Co., Ltd., providing services such as rural space design, cultural and creative product design, and rural operation for the beautiful countryside construction of Hupi Village.
Egret Farm, located amid Yihai Kerry's thousand-mu rapeseed fields, was once an abandoned livestock farm. Under Chen Song's design and renovation, it has become a rural homestay integrating parent-child study tours, flower sea viewing, and accommodation and office space.
"Only by integrating into the countryside and becoming familiar with it can we change it," Chen Song said. Egret Farm has become a popular check-in spot in Hupi Village. Every year when the rapeseed flowers bloom, visitors can sleep under the stars at night and see golden blossoms when they open the window—the "life they yearn for" in the minds of tourists.
Influenced by the earliest batch of "new villagers" such as Peng Bailing and Chen Song, many "new villagers" from different industries have also joined the ranks of beautiful countryside construction in Hupi Village. They renovate old houses and introduce new business forms such as study tours, homestays, and medical care, advancing the construction of Hupi Village through a "cultural creativity + agricultural tourism" model, gradually restoring vitality to this hollowed-out small village.
The "Earthworm Academy" on the west side of Hupi Village is under intense construction. Hu Jianyun, the owner of the "Earthworm Academy," is a "new villager" here. At the academy, he will teach life philosophy courses to young people to help them address physical and mental health issues. "Becoming a 'new villager' is my honor," Hu Jianyun said. Comprehensive rural revitalization used to be just a concept to him, but now it is a tangible and tangible undertaking. "Being able to collaborate with many interesting people, learn new knowledge, and jointly build a new Hupi is a meaningful thing."
Today, 13 households of "new villagers" have moved into Hupi Village. They integrate their own characteristics into the countryside and jointly bring new changes to Hupi Village.
"Focusing on the goal of beautiful countryside construction, we will explore more new business forms that match the countryside and attract more 'new villagers' to promote the diversified development of rural cultural tourism," said Chen Xiang, Secretary of the Nanchang County Party Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Xiaolan Economic and Technological Development Zone. Nanchang County will pay more attention to the construction of contiguous village-wide areas, using the magnetic effect of "new villagers" to attract more urban communities to start businesses in the countryside, and continue to advance the two-way journey between "new villagers" and "new rural scenery."
