According to the WeChat public account "Beautiful Chuzhou," the Chuzhou Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau of Anhui Province issued a notice on May 27 regarding abnormal water quality in the Chuhe River. The notice stated that on May 23, media reports indicated pollution in the Chuhe River, with fish and shrimp deaths. The city and county authorities attached great importance to the matter and immediately organized professional teams to investigate and handle the situation on site.

On-site inspections found dead fish floating on the water surface in the section from Huangcaowei to the Xianghekou Sluice within Quanjiao County and in the Pukou District section of Nanjing, with blackened water in some stretches. Through monitoring and source tracing, Chuzhou Fuxin Petroleum Additives Co., Ltd., located in the Quanjiao Economic Development Zone, was identified as the main source of pollution. At 19:50 on May 7, a fire broke out in the company's warehouse, causing some stored glycerin and molasses, together with firefighting wastewater, to enter nearby ditches and pipe networks via surface runoff. Quanjiao County, through measures such as building dams to intercept and pump out pollutants, collected and stored the leaked pollutants in a centralized manner and carried out harmless disposal. On May 11, approximately 50 mm of rainfall occurred in Quanjiao County, and the sewage remaining in the ditches and pipe networks that had not yet been cleaned up entered the Xianghe River and Chuhe River via rainwater runoff, causing some river sections to become turbid and blackened with foul odors, dissolved oxygen to decrease, and fish and shrimp to die.

After the incident, with strong support from relevant parties in Nanjing, the city and county promptly took measures to close the Chahe Sluice and Xianghekou Sluice in a timely manner to intercept the polluted water; conducted comprehensive patrols of the polluted river sections and promptly carried out harmless disposal of dead fish and shrimp; set up 7 monitoring points, 2 full-component monitoring points, and 4 agricultural water quality safety monitoring points on the Chuhe River to continuously monitor water quality, and based on the monitoring results, installed aeration devices to increase the oxygen content of the water. Public security authorities have opened investigations into the relevant persons involved in the case.

According to monitoring results from May 23 to 26, the water quality of the polluted water body has continued to improve. The Chuzhou Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau will continue to conduct follow-up water quality monitoring, handle the matter in accordance with the law and in a scientific, targeted, and effective manner, draw profound lessons, learn from one case to prevent similar ones, plug loopholes, and effectively safeguard ecological and environmental safety.
