On May 20, Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te stubbornly adhered to the "Taiwan independence" stance in his inauguration speech, vigorously promoting separatist fallacies, inciting cross-strait confrontation and antagonism, and vainly attempting to "rely on foreign forces to seek independence" and "seek independence through military means." Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stated in response that the Taiwan regional leader, disregarding public opinion and going against the tide, sent a dangerous signal of seeking "independence" and provocation and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, fully exposing his true nature as a "Taiwan independence worker." The spokesperson also clearly drew a red line against any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist act in the statement. "Taiwan independence" is a dead end! Lai Ching-te's provocation and confrontation are doomed to failure.

Lai Ching-te's "May 20" speech openly peddled the "two states" theory. He distorted the nature of cross-strait relations, claiming that "the two sides of the strait are not subordinate to each other"; incited the people on the island to "hate and fear China," hyping the "mainland military threat"; and vainly attempted to continue "relying on foreign forces to seek independence" and to "internationalize" the Taiwan question, with the entire text filled with confrontational thinking of "anti-China and resisting China." Previously, Lai Ching-te appointed diehard "Taiwan independence" elements to key positions in Taiwan's security and defense departments, which was directly pointed out by public opinion on the island as paving the way for "seeking independence through military means." Lai Ching-te's "May 20" speech and various signs show that he has no intention whatsoever of improving cross-strait relations and is determined to undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, vainly attempting "peaceful separation."

"Taiwan independence" is as incompatible with cross-strait peace as fire and water, and is a dead end that simply cannot be taken. The mainstream public opinion on the island is to want peace, not war; development, not decline; exchanges, not separation; and cooperation, not confrontation. No matter what banner Lai Ching-te raises or what rhetoric he fabricates, he is deceiving the public and cannot conceal his essence of seeking "independence"; he will only seriously harm the safety and interests of the Taiwanese people and is bound to be opposed by the vast number of Taiwan compatriots. On the day of "May 20," a netizen on the island commented, "Old Lai's taking office to pursue 'Taiwan independence' is pushing us to the brink of war." Media on the island even published commentary articles attacking and opposing Lai Ching-te's "Taiwan independence" remarks. Scholars on the island also called on Lai Ching-te to face reality and abandon "Taiwan independence."

No matter what Lai Ching-te says or how he says it, he cannot change the fact that both sides of the strait belong to one China, cannot change the basic pattern and development direction of cross-strait relations, and cannot stop the historical trend of the motherland's ultimate reunification. The motherland mainland's will to resolve the Taiwan question and complete national reunification is as solid as a rock, its ability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is indestructible, and its actions against "Taiwan independence" separatism and foreign interference are resolute and powerful. Any scheme and provocation of "Taiwan independence," in the face of the motherland mainland's powerful strength, is like an egg striking a rock and will surely end in failure.
